Hi all!

Thanks to  buddy215  for sending me here and recommending I uninstall a few security apps. I have had machine and network slowdowns, odd redirect behavior on Chrome and malfunctions on 3 or 4 computers here. I am not an expert and have spent 3 months fighting this.

These are some of the tools I have used to clean the machine:

Bitdefender Internet Security (paid) and resident
SpyBot S&D
Malware Bytes free
AVG free trial
ADWCleaner
Hitman Pro
RogueKiller
Rkill
Lavasoft Adaware
Microsoft emergency response tool
MS Windows Malicious Software removal tool
Junkware removal tool JRT
CCleaner
TDSSkiller
IObit
Malware Fighter

RogueKiller always indicates PUM:DNS changes of different times and the list has grown over time. In the last 48hrs, there has been no definite bad behavior, but I am not convinced that all is cleaned up. I see IRP:addr in the RK reports for security and mailslot. when I tried to upload this post to this forum, it failed and redirected me!

Below is the FRST report, as requested, from a Windows 8.1 tablet machine     , as instructed. Please let me know if there is anything still lurking and what more I can do.

THANK YOU!
Alan

hi,

I will try to help you. Iam only on this site once or twice per day. I my not reply back until the next day in some cases.

From your list it dosnt look like there are many tools left to run.

If you experiencing redirects on all the machines then you might want to reset your router back to factory defaults or at least open its web interface and check what DNS IP's it using. Unless you have changed them yourself-- they should be you ISP's DNS- a primary and secondary.

Last: do you use a proxy to access the internet? You should check the settings in the browser.

Thank you for taking up this problem with me, shelf life!

I have a cable modem serving telephone and wireless also. It does mnto seem to have a manual DNS entry to be set. I also have a wireless router plugged into the modem and it does have fields for manual DNS lookup, so I entered the DNS  servers for T-warner just now. I also reduced the number of DHCP addresses that can log in to 6.

The malware keeps adding DNS servers in the computer though. That is what comes up in Rogue Killer all the time and increases in number when not cleaned.

There is no proxy set for the T-W modem. Evidently it is not required.

I think the infection is a number of different services and registry entries that have been injected into the computer. They operate under the radar and include the equivalent of remote desktop and remote access processes. can they be ferreted out?

In the past 24hrs I thought I had increased security on the modem and router but someone came sailing through and defeated the AV software, WebRoot, on my MacBook  Pro as I was using it. (A different machine than this, of course.)

Many Thanks!

Alan

We will use FRST to remove some items and see how that goes.

Copy/paste whats below into notepad. Save it as  fixlist.txt  in the same location that you have FRST. Your desktop. Start FRST and this time click the fix button once.

The tool will create a log on the desktop called Fixlog.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of the file in your reply. Machine may also reboot to finish removal process.

Shelf life, Glad to run any scanners you prescribe.

Here is the fixlog from the FRSTfix and then the RogueKiller report. I did not clean with the RogueKiller,, just a report.

I have to post quickly before anyone starts to interfere with the mouse and browser functions. This is a sparate computer, also infected.

Thanks!

Alan

Not a whole lot there really to worry about. You can have Rougekiller fix these two lines under the registry tab: Start a scan select the two items and click the delete button.

[PUM.SearchPage] (X64) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-5034677-37930950-231872986-1000\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main | Search Bar : http://search.msn.com/spbasic.htm  -> Found
[PUM.SearchPage] (X86) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-5034677-37930950-231872986-1000\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main | Search Bar : http://search.msn.com/spbasic.htm  -> Found

So if you go to network and sharing center in the control panel. click on the left-- Change adapter settings.
Right click on the-- local area connection in use, select properties
then click on-- internet protocol version 4
select properties button
then the advanced button
Then the DNS tab
Do you see any DNS server IP listed?

Thanks, Shelf Life;

I checked the DNS setting and it is blank. There is no IP in the boxes on that page.

But the PUM:Search is a typical bug. When I select and delete it in RogueKiller, it gets replaced by RK with exactly the same string!  Tried it twice.

Nothing to worry about.

You can also as a check reset Chrome back to its defaults ( if you still have "redirects" in Chrome) or backup its bookmarks, uninstall and reisnstall it:

Reset: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?hl=en

uninstall: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en

reinstall: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en

ESET:

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

US Link: http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
EU Link: http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner/

Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 users will need to right click on their Internet Explorer shortcut, and select Run as Administrator
Note: For browsers other than Internet Explorer, you will be prompted to download and install esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe. Click on the link and save the file to a convenient location. Double click on it to install and a new window will open. Follow the prompts.

Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
Click the blue Run ESET Online Scanner button
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    Click Start
When asked, allow the program to install the "OnlineScanner.cab" activex control by clicking the Install button
Once the activex control is installed, on the next screen click on Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications
    Click on Advanced Settings
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked.
    Ensure these options are ticked
        Scan archives
        Scan for potentially unsafe applications
        Enable Anti-Stealth technology

Under "Current Scan Targets" > click "change" and ensure all your drives are selected
    Click Start
Wait for the scan to finish
When the scan is done, if it shows a screen that says "Threats found!", then click "List of found threats", and then click "Export to text file..."
Save that text file on your desktop. Attach the log as a reply to your next reply..
Close the ESET online scan, and let me know how things are now.

I ran ESET successfully. Downloaded it on Chrome and ran it off-line.

The list reminded me that I have a few applications installed on Drive D:. Most of the hits are in the storage drives.

I could not get IE to load this site this morning.

Some of my emails on gmail replies and forwards that I make using other computers, are not getting through to the recipients. The url's that pop up in the address bar when accessing gmail are sometimes very long and suspicious. I have not used this computer for that since we have been trouble-shooting it.

Thanks!

Alan

Not a whole lot there. Adware stuff. No malware.  If those are external dirves you can disconnect them so we can isolate the computer in question. Not really making any progress as far as malware goes, not finding any.

For IE you can also try resetting it back to its defaults-- also check delete personal settings:

Shelf LIfe,

It looks pretty good now. These steps have stopped whatever was throwing fits at the browser and I think we can call it clean. Redirects and popups are gone. I will be watching for any more signs of intruders. Thanks for all the help!

Ok good and your welcome. You could get one more download to remove the special tools that you used. It will also delete itself afterwards: Anything left over you can delete manually. Happy Safe surfing "out there".

Please download Delfix.exe and save it to your desktop. It will remove the special tools and there associated folders/files.

    https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/2-delfix/

Right click and select "run as admin" check: "Remove disinfection tools" and click on the Run button.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes. You can delete the log it generates
