I would welcome clarification on the following, which I need to understand in relation to my Cloud services, synching, disc storage space, etc:

1. How can you tell if a folder / file has been 'made available online only' and is a Smart File'?  I have seen some files which have a description in detailed view which says 'online only' but have many other files which I have  'made online' (I hope) and which do not have this label

2. If a file is online only will the size shown in Properties be its size on the internet but not it local, PC size?

3. What does it mean when Properties reports that the file size is xyz but the size on disc is abc?

4. I have been told that if you make a folder 'online only' all sub-folders and files in it are automatically made 'online only' but I have folders made 'online only' which contain folders / files which appear to be available off-line, eg. in their context menu the option to make them online is still shown

5. Is it normally the case that with a Cloud service you can choose to sync in both directions, or if you want you can sync in one direction only, either 'up' or 'down'?

I don't know anything about Smart Files or online files, but I can answer #3 and maybe #5

3 - newer disks have large® "units" - and they store the bits and bytes there until one is full, then they move on to the next one.  Eventually the end one isn't completely filled up.  This isn't a real big deal with a single file, but it can add up to a lot of space if you have a lot of files.

5 - Each cloud service has different software/services/procedures, so you'll have to check each individual situation to be sure

Thanks for that info.  I have been making the mistake of not using the details view of files recently.  Now switching to details view has revealed large numbers of 'only available online' files' which is what I wanted.  There are still some anomalies, however.

My question on syncing largely concerned DropBox.  I have not selected syncing at all, yet it seems to be happening with a vegance.  Events (ie. the history tab) shows numerous activities, with new files and worse, many deletions I have not initiated.  Browsing the DropBox Forum reveals other users having similar issues.  As I result I dont use DropBox much, despite the fact that it has good features --- I dont trust it.

Uninstall the Dropbox software.  You can still access it by going to http://www.dropbox.com
