Hamluis:

Sorry to trouble you again.  I posted about two months ago about the intermittent, and apparently random, failure of my system images (all partitions) of my computer to pass verification checks.  Link to original post: Link to Previous Windows 7 Forum Post

I had tried, in those days, an internal 2 TB WD Caviar drive and an external WD 3 TB My Book Essential drive as target backup drives.  I alternate two backup programs weekly (Paragon HD Manager Suite 12 and Easeus Todo Backup 8.02).  Originally, it randomly failed backup image checks of the backup software regardless of target drive selected and regardless of the backup program used.  Both programs always report a successful backup operation, then and now.

You had me run a Mini-Toolbox scan.  Upon analyziing it, you were concerned that possibly the RAID0 array of two 600 GB WD Velociraptors might be an issue, either the RAID) controller or some Windows glitch with the RAID0 array.  I contacted Maingear, the company which built my computer and they concurred with your analysis, but also suggested that if breaking and resetting the RAID0 array did not work, then the next step would be a complete reinstall of Windows 7, and if that didn't work, then ....

I decided to purchase a 1 TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD drive and cloned my former RAID0 array to it.  Then I broke the RAID0 array, swapped the drives around, so that my current configuration has the SSD as my C: drive, set the BIOS to AHCI, set my 2 TB WD Caviar, as D: drive, and I assigned the drive letters K: and L: to the now separate 600 GB WD Velocirapators and ran diagnostics on them immediately afterwords, with no errors reported  ...  and life was good, until last Friday.  I decided, at the outset, to use K: for the Easeus backup images and L: for the Paragon images because of the higher speed of the Velociraptors compared to the Caviar.  The Samsung Magician software has consistently reported that the SSD is healthy and operating normally.

Last week, the Easeus system image failed the "Check Image" test right at the very end on the K: drive.  I could browse the image and see my files, so it was not that badly corrupted, though whether I could do a complete restore is unknown.  I cold booted my computer and re-ran the backup and the check, and this time it passed.  Subsequently, I ran a "chkdsk /f" on the SSD, a "chkdsk /r" on the K: drive, and the WD Data Lifeguard diagnostics on the K: drive.  "Chkdsk" found some minor errors on both drives, but nothing serious.  The WD diagnostics was clean for K:.

Today, I ran a Paragon full system image (alll partitions), with L: as the target drive.  It failed the "Archive Integrity" check part way through, reporting some kind of error in sectors on the target drive.  I ran the WD diagnostics on that drive today after the failure and it came back clean.  I then re-ran the backup and the Archive Integrity check, and this time it passed, just like last week, using Easeus.

I am absolutely confident that there is no malware on this computer.  I run Bitdefender 2015 Total Security, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Premium and do deep scans almost daily.

I am at a loss to explain what is happening here and I am hoping that you might be able to guide me to a solution.  It cannot be a target drive hardware problem, affecting three different WD internal hard drives, and one external hard drive.  I am suspicious that there is some kind of random read error occurring during the verification checks and that the backups are, in essence, good, but I don't want to bet my data on that assumption!

By the way, I am quite happy with my decision to purchase the 1 TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD.  The performance is amazing, and it was worth the chance that breaking the RAID0 array would solve the problem, which it appeared to do for about six weeks.  Unlike last time, I have not had any intermittent BSODs.

I am not keen to reinstall Windows.  It would take me weeks to get this computer back up and running, with all of the apps and data that I have, and Windows 10 is coming ... .  If we can find a fix short of that, I would be most grateful.  Thank you for any help and suggestions that you might have, Louis.  Your advice has been, and is, much appreciated.

Here is the same Mini-Toolbox run that you requested the last time.

Have you excluded your backup destination drives, folders, and/or files from the on access scanner?

How to Add Exclusions in Bitdefender 2015

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

There is a FixIt for the 80041003 errors, along with other suggestions.

How often do you run chkdsk /r on each partition?

The Diagnostics Tracking Service errors...I have no clue but I would suspect file corruption.  But, really...I don't see where your current errors point to anything.

Louis and Zcomputerwhiz:

The backup target drives are both excluded from both BD on access scanning and on demand scanning, and have been since I switched my C: drive to the Samsung SSD.  Good thought, though.  That could cause random reads.

I will look into the Fixit solution.  I have run chkdsk /r's on both destination drives in the last month, but I will run it again on both drives in advance of my next backup to each drive.

I too suspect some kind of file corruption, but which file or files; or, possibly something running that is interfering with the backup verification tasks.

I will report back next week after running a chkdsk /r on the target drive immediately prior to my Friday backup   Thanks for your help.  Any other suggestions are most welcome.  This issue is most frustrating.

Have a great day.

-Phil

Louis (and others):

I have run the Fixit tool recommended.  I see the RTE here messed up your link as it frequently does to mine, but I found the Fixit, thanks to Google.  Next Friday I will back up to Drive K:.  Below is the "chkdsk /r" report from yesterday on that drive.  As you can see, no obvious issues.

Louis:

Just reporting back with an update.  I did run the Fixit you recommended.  I just completed a backup and backup verification (Easeus ToDo Backup this week) without an issue.  Of course, I did earlier in the week run a chkdsk /r on the target drive, which is used exclusively for Easeus backups (one old Windows Backup on that drive as well).  I have found in the past that running target drive diagnostics and then re-running the backup normally leads to a successful verification outcome even though errors are not detected on the target drive (bad sectors), so this is proof of nothing.

I am very grateful to you for pointing out the possibility that my RAID0 array might have been responsible for my BSODs and system backup image verification failures.  Since I "killed" the RAID0 array and moved my OS to the Samsung 850 Pro SSD drive, there have been no more BSODs, so I have no doubt that you were correct on that theory, which, of course, was confirmed by the Maingear Support folks who suspected the RAID0 array software or a corrupt Windows file interacting with the RAID0 array as you did.  So, no doubt, you solved my biggest issue.

Today I rebooted my computer, preparatory to launching my Easeus ToDo Backup Home (Version 8.3) software.  My computer, as you can tell from the Speccy snapshot, linked in a previous post of this thread, has a reasonably powerful, over-clocked i7 CPU, which it has had since I purchased the computer back about 3.5 years ago (the intermittent verification issues only date back less than a year).  I noted that my CPU was not "settling" after boot, as I would expect, and went into the Task Manager, Processes, to see what was consuming a steady 12 to 15 percent of my CPU.

I found the culprit: IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe.  I did some research here, and elsewhere, on this process.  Rather than uninstall the program (not knowing the consequences), I went into Windows Services and set it to "Manual" start and rebooted.  I confirmed that the service was stopped and then proceeded with my backup.  Some interesting links:

http://www.file.net/process/iastordatamgrsvc.exe.html

https://communities.intel.com/message/126837

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe-26954.html

From what I can gather, since I have no plans to ever run a RAID array again on this computer, I should be safe to remove it altogether?  I am surprised that the RAID configuration utility did not stop this service when I "broke" the RAID0 array.

My suspicion is that this service might have been interfering with reads/writes to the backup target drive, during verification and/or the actual backup itself.

I would be interested in your thoughts, Louis.  The reason I am reporting my suspicion is, if you think it is possible, it might be something to suggest to users who have weird problems like I was experiencing, if you learn they were, or are, using a RAID array.

I would also appreciate your advice as to whether it is safe to remove the program altogether.

I am very grateful to you, Louis, and the other fantastic folks here at BC, and hope to contribute in my own fashion to the best of my limited abilities here at BC.

Have a great weekend, Louis, and, as always, thank you for sharing your time and expertise, with me and everyone else.  I commend you.

Regards,

-Phil

Just one other quick note:  my BIOS is set to AHCI and Samsung Magician is managing the SSD, reporting that it working at peak performance.

Have a great day.

Regarding the iastor driver/service...I don't have any Intel CPUs so I have no experience with it but I do know that some members here have had it fingered as the cause of problems.

FWIW:  See http://www.file.net/process/iastordatamgrsvc.exe.html .

I would remove it, along with the Samsung software...I don't believe in using all the fluff that chipset and CPU makers load onto their installation disks these days.hardware   I don't believe that adding software/firmware to an SSD...is an essential part of using an SSD.  I'm not that kind of computer user, so I can't really comment on such.  I've looked at a couple of reviews of it...and I know that it would not be on my system.

I try to keep my use of computers simple...I don't need/want to "optimize" anything, I just want everything to work without problems.  Every piece of software installed which does something that is totally unnecessary...enhances the chances of developing problems with the system, IMO.

You might initiate a topic in the Internal Hardware forum...the folks down there would be better qualified to discuss the relative merits/demerits of the tiems above.

Louis

Louis:

Thank you for your advice.  I will remove the Intel software.  As for the Samsung Magician, it seems, from what I can read, to enhance the functionality and speed of the SSD.  I concur with your comments about "bloatware" and I generally follow your rule of advice: get rid of it.  The Samsung Magician software has a relatively small footprint, so for now, I will keep it and reassess at a later date.

Louis:

I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to get rid of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application this morning.  Lots of warnings from the app when I started the uninstall.  It definitely did not want to part company with my computer.  Everything seems fine.

If that solved the backup verification failure problem, it will probably be a few months before I can be sure.  I had six weeks of good backup verifications after my migration to the Samsung SSD, and then two weeks in a row, backup verification failures with my alternating backup programs.

Hopefully I will be able to post back in about two to three months to report that we finally nailed the app responsible for the intermittent verification failures.  We know that it and/or the RAID array were responsible for the BSODs, which I would never have figured out without your help.  You got me going in the right direction.

Thanks again, Louis.  Have a great day.

-Phil
