My Dell Inspiron 620 previously allowed function key selected during P.O.S.T. but now for some unexplained reason appears for less than one second which is not long enuff to allow function key to be selected. How can this be changed ?

In the BIOS there is a setting called FAST BOOT or something similar.  This setting basically bypasses the POST screen.  You can resolve this by pressing the key before turning on the computer and either continue to tap the key vigorously or hold it down until you can get into the BIOS screen and change it.  This setting can be automatically selected to ON if you choose 'Load Performance defaults' but you can manually change it back.
