Dell laptop shuts down when the Battery is inserted.

My Dell laptop will not operate with the fully charged battery inserted even when connected to power.

System operates fine on direct power but as soon as the battery is inserted the computer shuts down.

Has anyone else ever encountered this problem? If so...?
