Hi i have a bit of a proble with my Windows XP Pro computer

when i click on any file and try to change the name i get this message (if you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?) if i select yes the file is then unusable

I don't know why it is doing this but i have a feeling i must have changed a setting some ware and its driving me mad.

Have tried anti virus and spyware scans nothing found.

any help would be most appreciated.

You change the name of a file to the left of the dot only.

dog.jpg can be changed to anything.jpg.

It cannot be changed to dog.bmp or dog.gif or whatever.(without converting it with an image editor)

Just a small point here, I find it more helpful to have the file extensions displayed by explorer. as when you are re-naming it takes literally what you type.

In explorer goto tools/folder options/view tab, uncheck 'hide extensions for known file types' and OK it. ;)
