few days ago, i've been getting this popup constantly trying to advertising various spyware removal programs and occasionally mcafee popup saying a PUP found...

somebody please help and thanks a lot in advance

Download smitRem.exe
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Download ATF Cleaner
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Do not run it yet. We will use this later.
Download Ewido Anti-Spyware
  • Install Ewido by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch Ewido is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan? all boxes should be selected.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software: all boxes should be checked.
    • Under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
    • Under What to scan? select Scan every file.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
  • If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido » Ewido manual updates.

Reboot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer.
  • Before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly.
  • A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu using your arrow keys and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • This will take a while than usual, so just wait.

Run smitRem
  • Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • The tool will create a log found in C:\smitfiles.txt. I will need you to post that later.

Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run Ewido Anti-Spyware
  • Please close all Windows, Programs or Browsers.
  • Open Ewido.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When scan has finished, at bottom of the screen click Apply all Actions.
  • Click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Go to Start | Control Panel | Display | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button | Web tab.
  • Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar.
  • If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button.
  • Click OK, then Apply, and lastly OK.

Restart your computer

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here using Internet Explorer.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open, click the big Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country.
    • Enter your State/Province.
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send.
    • Select either Home User or Company.
    • Click the big Scan Now button.
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan.
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
NOTE: Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.

hi again, i attempted what you said: i ran smitrem...but eventually after it finishes it closed on its own. so i couldn't get any logs from it. i ran it a second time and close midway only black screen screen remain so i rebooted my comp and got the message explorer.exe failed to start because wininet.dll was not found. reinstalling the application may fix problem. computer start up normally though. message only appears when i try to log on.

ps. this is a different comp im using for now..

Looks like wininet.dll is infected. Let's try to do this :

Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking Support (restart your computer and press F8 repeatedly until you get the screen with options).

Go to:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\

And then find wininet.dll, when you find it, move it to your Desktop. Then reboot again to Safe Mode with Networking Support.

Now scan your Desktop here :

It should detect the infected wininet.dll file. After the scan is finished, choose CURE files - don't choose DELETE !!

The scanner will clean the wininet.dll file. So you can now move it to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ again.

After that, restart. And then try to run smitRem again.

hi, i tried to start it up in safemode with networking and when it gets to the log in screen i tried logging in with my name again and the meesage pop up again (message explorer.exe failed to start because wininet.dll was not found. reinstalling the application may fix problem.) it also pop up when i tried to login it with another name.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Reboot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer.
  • Before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly.
  • A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu using your arrow keys and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • This will take a while than usual, so just wait.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder.
  • Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
  • The report can also be found here - C:\rapport.txt
  • NOTE : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

hi, i tried but still could not log into my computer regularly or with any safemode. the wininet.dll message still pop up, but now found out that using ctrl alt del, i could only run mozilla firefox and window word. i cant run internet explorer, mcafee, spybot, microsoft antispyware...anyways i got a new hijack log though. as for that one program you said (smitfraudfix) i already downloaded it and unzip using that window task manager... i'll reboot in safemode now... if i could run that program i'll try and post the log back on here

Oh I didn't see your reply. Looks like SmitfraudFix was already ran, did it fix the wininet.dll file? Did it ask you about wininet.dll?

Open the SmitfraudFix folder.

* Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
* Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.
* You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
* The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
* The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
* A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
* The report can also be found here - C:\rapport.txt
* NOTE : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

hi, sorry about missing the post last night, thought i was in a different time zone so didn't realize i was gonna get a quick response. anyways the message still pop up with regular normal login and also in safemode.

hi again, i spoke too soon. i looked on my local c drive from the ctrl alt del method and saw the REG_XP or install, i forgot which i use, anyways the end result was that it said wininet.dll was infected and the tool moved something somewhere, (i forgot the wording and didn't write it down anywhere). at least now i could login normally. so do you want me to run any program? thanks you so much. explorer also stop giving me that page with annoying offers and pop up.

Ok, so the wininet file is already clean. SmitfraudFix should be responsible for it.

Your computer is now clean! :thumbsup:

Now that you're clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.) Re-Hide System Files and Folders:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
2.) Reset and Re-enable your System Restore

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.
You have now flushed your previous System Restore points, so we will make a new one again since your computer is already clean.
  • Go to Start » All Programs » Accessories » System Tools, and select System Restore
  • In the System Restore prompt, select: Create a restore point
  • Click Next
  • Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
  • Click Create
  • Then close the window
3.) How to Prevent Re-Infection

Please take your time reading on this list, it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. Two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both free.
    Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, it will conflict with each other and will only make your system slow.
