For some reason any machine I try to use via wireless gets configured with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0      I get local connection but no internet access. Comcast is stumped as well. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Not sure about static or DHCP and I am using a router/modem provided by Comcast. I have not changed anything other than firewall settings as far as the router modem is concerned. I usually choose Home or Public when network is first discovered.

Unless you are using this in a business (or a public wifi access place), you are best to always choose Home or Private for a network location.  Private should give a 24 bit mask (254 possible host addresses).

Are there any other devices in the network that are acting as a DHCP server other than the router?

Do you have a separate router?  Or is the router part of the Comcast equipment?

The Comcast equipment is the only router.

Let me gather some more info if I can,,,,I will then post what I am sure of instead of guessing.  Thanks very much for the interest and time.

This(MiniTool log) is from a machine that seems to be running normal at the moment and am not sure why it would be configured different than the others. Again,,,,Let me do some more investigating on the other ones that will not connect. Here is the MiniTool scan from machine MiniToolBox by Farbar Version: 14-04-2015

Have you checked the gateway configuration? Did Comcast walk you through checking it?

If not, please do so. (ignore if you have already done this)

1.Choose a laptop or WiFi device that is currently connected to your network. If none of your devices are connected, use an Ethernet cable and connect a computer or laptop directly to your wireless gateway.

2.Open a web browser and go to the Admin Tool (http://10.0.0.1) – this is the wireless gateway's administration site.

The default settings are:

•Username: admin

•Password: password (case-sensitive)

(If you have not changed the default password you will be asked if you want to change it. I suggest you do so)

After the Admin Tool opens look on the left side of the page and click Connection then choose Status

Under Local IP Network is Subnet mask:

Does yours have  255.255.0.0 listed as the subnet mask?

If it does, click the Edit drop-down arrow next to Local IP Network

On the page that opens click the drop-down arrow next to  Subnet mask:

Change it to 255.255.255.0

Click Save Settings

Running MiniTool on working PC doesn't really do us any good. If you have a USB thumb drive you can get it on the PC not connecting and get the results off so you can post them.

the only reason a machine would have different settings is if they are set Static. Look at the IPv4 properties of the wireless connection, if it's set to Obtain IP address Automatically then it's set to use DHCP if it has numbers assigned it's set to static.

Hope this helps thumbup.gif

Answer for "queen-evie"

Yes, I was speaking to the Comcast tech when I discovered the 255.255.0.0 config.instead of 255.255.255.0. The tech asked me if these were ever business machines. I said no and they said I need to have someone physically take a look.

Would it help to post logs from the router?

I want to add that this is the 4th Router/Modem I have tried in less than 1 year.

It was worth a "just in case" shot.
