Virus/malware/spyware Hell

I am very frustrated. I feel I've read these posts (and on different sites also) for days and I'm getting nowhere. I simply do not know what I'm looking for.

Here's the scoop. Since I now get error messages when I try to log in to my web based email from my desktop, I have to write this from my notebook. I will type a list of symptoms after I share the computer information below.

I am running a:
Systemax Computer
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
512 MB

1. DAT files will not update for the following programs. I get an error message trying to update Ad-Aware.
a. Spybot S&D
b. AD-Aware
2. Microsoft Update will not update. I get an error stating that the page cannot be viewed.
3. McAfee no longer works. I deleted it and tried to re-install. It won't re-install and I get an error message.
4. I can run HijackThis however the log file will not save no matter how I try to save it.
5. I get error messages when I try to access web based emails.

So far, this has me very stumped. I could really use some help.

Please can you try the following for me..

Please download Ewido anti-spyware 4; it is a 30 day trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Ewido will automatically run at the end.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the top row of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on "Start Update".
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the top will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Don't run it yet.

Reboot into SAFE MODE
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

Open Ewido anti-malware
Click on the scanner button in the top row.
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom left of the screen and click the "Save Scan Report" button.
  • Click on "Save Report As".
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Please reboot back to normal mode and the ewido log you previously save to your desktop.
Once you have done this, follow the Preparation Guide Before Posting A HijackThis Log, before posting your log, along with the Ewido log in new topic in our HijackThis Logs and Analysis Forum.

I don't know whether you have tried scanning in Safe Mode or not, but some processes do not load, which may allow you to get rid of this malware.
As for the HJT log, you do not really have to save it, it should just open in a Notepad file, and you can copy and paste it straight into a New Topic in our forum.

Please let me know if you have any problems, or this does not work for you.

Thank you for your help. As it turns out, the year on my Date and Time Properties were not correct. It was this that wasn't allowing me to update anything and not letting me log into my web based email programs.
