I am a little confused here, studying for my network+ exam, about the difference between a T1 Smart jack, the network interface device, and the other (same?) smart jack, which they are saying is a special loopback plug installed at demarc for wan service?

Are these one in the same, in that the smart jack is for ISP troubleshooting where as the loopback plug is for CPE troubleshooting?

edit: title may be a little misleading i was only first introduced to smart jacks as T1 NID's they could be smart jacks for any other type of WAN service (if they exist or are used for others)
