Hi. I have an Acer 5515 with Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.  For a few years I regularly made all kinds of boot cds (Kaspersky Rescue cd, Knoppix, Hiren's, Bitdefender) and never had a problem loading and using them.  About a year ago, I tried booting a hiren's cd and it wouldn't boot up. It spins and tries, but then just goes to the desktop.  I even tried a Microsoft CD and THAT wouldn't boot either. I've tried other boot cds and no joy.

Why is this happening? Why would it just decide not to boot any CD?  A couple of years ago, I took out my HDD and put it in hours later. Could that have caused this?  Everything else about this pc is stellar.  NO other issues.  I have the boot order correct in BIOS.  I ran a cleaning cd to remove dust..twice. It's clean.  Could someone tell me what's going on?  I'm frustrated.

Here is the info you requested.  It was a challenge. Avast kept detecting Minitoolbox as a virus.  I had to disable Avast just to post this!  Thanks for replying.

First off, you have two anitvirus programs installed.  You need to uninstall one of these.  You can't just disable one, it has to be uninstalled.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to Windows resource management and significant conflicts that can arise especially when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up regardless of whether real-time protection is enabled or not. Thus, using multiple anti-virus solutions can result in kernel mode conflicts causing system instability, catastrophic crashes, slow performance and waste vital system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, each anti-virus may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior.

Please run System File Checker

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Start orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

This will open the Elevated Command Prompt, it will look similar to the image below.

elevatedcommandpromptw7_zpseba8c499.png

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems the scan will stop.  Type in exit, then press Enter to stop the scan.

When the scan is finished please post the log of this scan.

To find sfc /scannow log, type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

cmd will appear above the search box under Apps., right click on it and choose Run as administrator, this will open the Elevated Command Prompt.  This will look simlar to the image above.

Copy and paste the following in the Elevated Command Prompt, then press Enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Double click on this icon to open the log, copy it and paste it in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Here is the log.  But first, I must tell you something funy.  Without getting into it, I am a long time student of various antivirus programs.  I'm well aware of the rule against running more than 1 at a time.  I am not running 2 antivirus'.  Avast is the AV.  When I got Comodo, I asked on their forum why they don't just have a download for the firewall.  They told me since its free and to save money, they consolidated one big download containing everything, and I pick which components I want to install.  I have the Firewall.  Comodo includes their cloud protection which doesnt store any signatures on the pc.

As for HitmanProAlert, that is a tiny browser watcher and Cryptolocker Blocker..that's all.

Hello again. Just so you know, I thought about what you said about the AVs. I completely uninstalled Comodo because I had recently installed the latest version over a very old version I had and it was using a lot of resources.  It wasn't a smooth integration.  I did a fresh install of Comodo's Firewall only.

So far so good.

Whats more, I ran the Windows Memory check and it came back with no errors.  I await your next set of instructions.

If you install the Comodo Internet Security I don't see how you could install just the firewall as it is integrated in the antivirus.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

OP simply did what I did earlier, after installing cfw[whatever].exe, after reboot, one simply right-clicks on the taskbar notification Comodo icon and ensures that only Firewall [and HIPPS] is enabled; everything is disabled.  OP, dc3 has a very valid point about installed [even if not active] modules -- perhaps uninstall Comodo Firewall and use only Windows Firewall, which is more than adequate for the average computing/firewall needs.

Hello again. Didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest. When downloading Comodo's firewall from their site, they NO LONGER give you the option of just downloading the firewall package. They have 1 download. It contains everything. You choose whether you want just the firewall, firewall with Proactive security, or the whole magilla.  I chose the firewall.  Myself and millions of others comodo users have done this for years. Do I want to do it this way? No.

It's how Comodo does business.  I have no choice. I love Comodo.  I trust their firewall with HIPS.  I do not like or use Windows firewall.

What's more, my real issue here is that my pc no longer will boot any cd.  It did for years with no problem.  I had the same setup all along.  Avast AV+Comodo firewall.

So with that said, whats the next step for me in solving this mystery now that I've posted these various results?  Can you tell me what could possibly be causing my pc to not want to boot any CD?

For testing purposes, uninstall Avast so that you only have the one.  This will allow you to use the firewall you want, and still be protected with a decent antivirus.  Because having two antivirus programs installed can create significant problems, I'm going to be adamant about removing one of the antivirus programs.  Without doing this I can't be sure if it is causing these problems or not.

I'm using Avast Internet Security which has a good firewall.  It cost $29.99, but you may find that it is well worth it.

Is it possible to have had a CD-DVD onboard mobo limited crash?  A user years ago kept trying to force a 3.5 to read in a floppy, causing a bad noise for a few moments.  Afterwards, it never booted again, it read the diskettes, but never booted again.

After getting the extra software out of the way [which also stops the dual "check removable drives" action], maybe check CD-DVD operations with an external CD-DVD drive as a test?

There is nothing in the MiniToolBox that indicates a problem of this nature.  There were a lot of corrupted files which could account for some of this.  If it was related to a newer system (opposed to the problems you are trying to relate this to in older systems) I would suggest checking in the Device Manager to see if the driver for the DVD/CD-ROM was corrupt.  Or deleting the upper and lower filters.  If these are bootable discs that aren't starting it could simply be because the BIOS boot order doesn't have the optical drive set as the first device in the boot order and the HDD/SSD set as the second device.

Thanks for the reminder about boot sequence, dc3!  Appreciate it.  I mentioned hardware only because when I worked for a computer company phone tech support, and later for a company that replaced computer parts onsite, I had to, respectively, for many out of box systems, within one month-one year systems, arrange for parts replacements, and later replace 'em onsite.  Again, thanks for the boot sequence reminder.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Had to go out.  My boot order has been checked by me 4 times. It has been set and saved. Reset and saved and so on.

It is not the boot order. Again, everything was fine for 3 years or so and then...nada.

I will uninstall Avast today.  After which, should I then attempt to boot a cd?  Also, as you mentioned, there were many corrupt files in the Mini Tool Box report.  How does that get resolved?  A couple months ago I ran sfc /scannow and checkdisk.  Neither made a difference.

I await your reply.

What ever files were corrupt were repaired.
