I'm trying to get together parts for a gaming PC for around 1k from Micro Center. I'm not really good at it so I want some opinions on it.

Hello. It looks fine really. I've got the same motherboard myself.  I have a few suggestions you may or may not want to consider.

Something I would personally change is the power supply. Corsair's CX750 is not bad but it's got a reputation for coil whine which can annoy some people, and at $100 seems a bit steep - you sometimes see them very heavily discounted.  You certainly don't need 750w for the parts you have chosen, as they are all fairly power efficient.  I would prefer something like this - http://www.microcenter.com/product/446918/SuperNOVA_GS_650_Watt_80_Gold_Modular_ATX_12V_Power_Supply - lower rated wattage, but much higher quality and also fully modular.  Or sticking with Corsair this one is better than the CX - http://www.microcenter.com/product/425476/CS650M_650_Watt_80_Plus_Semi_Modular_ATX_PSU

I think for most purposes, at 1Tb the WD Black drives are not worth the extra expense over WD Blue. Revised list looks like this (it's not picking up the CPU and memory prices are these are pick up only with that vendor). Should be well in budget anyway.  You might even be able to afford a more powerful GPU in something like an R9-290 4Gb from other vendors (from about $40 over what you are paying on the GTX960) which are notably faster, but on the downside use a lot more power. Easily powered by the PSU's mentioned here though.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($139.99 @ Micro Center)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card  ($189.99 @ Micro Center)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer  ($19.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $586.93
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Hi there,

Looks like a fabulous setup for gaming and intense tasks, my PC is less beefy than

that and can still take any task I throw at it, so yours will have no problem, 10 / 10. :)
