This is so aggravating.

It seems that every single time I finish using my computer and go to shut it down, my Windows 8.1 needs an update. It always tells me "update and shut down" or "update and restart" and the bad thing is that these updates take a ton of my hard drive space, too! My hard drive space decreased from 455 GB to 407 GB and it's all because of these updates because I barely have any files on here. Anybody else have this problem?

Hi. . .

I don't have an exact answer/reason for you regarding the amount (number) of Windows Updates for Windows 8.1 other than to say that the total number of updates/patches to date is seemingly normal compared to previous Windows OS'.

Many updates are the result of bug reporting (WERCON) that flows to Microsoft; the resulting updates/patches fix such bugs.

As of the round of updates that installed a few minutes ago, the number of Windows Updates in the W8.1 system I am currently using totals 144 and includes updates for Office 2013.

You can get a listing of Windows Updates in your system via several different methods/commands native to Windows.

Using the systeminfo command -

You can also get a very detailed listing by using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) - #44 in this WMI listing -

http://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-8-windows-rt-tutorials/12295-windows-management-instrumentation-wmi-windows-10-8-1-8-7-vista.html

Here is the HTML output from WMI #44 - http://www.sysnative.com/jcgriff2/postedfiles/WindowsUpdates_wmi_qfe_04-27-2015_jcgriff2.html

A good 3rd party app that lists detailed Windows Updates info is Belarc Advisor - http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

For info, the average Windows 7 SP1 system that I've seen logs/system files for has nearly 300 Windows Updates as of a few weeks ago.
