Hi.

After recent up dates I keep getting. "the program can't check for definition updates error code 0x8007007e" on windows defender.

The window updates loaded fine and I have checked for virus (clean) I even tried the microsoft tech guys who want to charge for sorting it out. Can anyone help please as its starting to slow my comp down. I am on windows vista home premium 32bit.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Interestingly enough there has been a update today but it has not corrected the problem. This looks to be another of Microsoft cock ups!!!

"Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.197.474.0)

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

Anyone else getting this problem?

Edit 2: More updates arrived along with download for Microsoft security essentials.

After running a command prompt sfc/scannow I get.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Details of the System File Checker process are. (but i do not know how to correct it and i did not get a disk with this comp. Any help please.)

Hello Oneman,

I'm not sure if this helps, but I believe that MSE interferes with, or replaces, use of Windows Defender, and you shouldnt use both. I stopped using Defender a couple of years ago myself, but if you are having issues that sfc is unable to fix, the OEM for your laptop should provide you with disks at little or no cost so you can do a repair of any corrupted files. Good luck to you, and let me know if it works out.  Mark.

Yes MarkMCS Thanks.

I have just discovered that. It says (defender) is turned off but requests that i turn it on for security reasons and provides a link (I then get the error code) I was getting the same code before MSE was installed though.

You would have thought that the tech guys at microsoft help would have mentioned that instead of trying to charge me.

Would it be worth uninstalling defender? (if possible) or would that cause problems?

Defender is built into Vista, so you would just turn it off. (defender tools> options> scroll down to administrator options> uncheck "use windows defender") and save.  I also disabled it in the msconfig startup tab.  I THINK I was still getting definition updates from windows update until I did that, but I can't recall.

As for the tcpmon.ini issue, you would most likely need a disk to repair/replace.

I believe I ended up manually reinstalling sp2 a couple of years back to correct it, but only because the error annoyed me, not because it was causing problems!  That's a drastic and time consuming option and I'm not recommending that.

Installation of printers can cause sfc to return the tcpmon errors, but your system may still work fine.  If so, you may not need to correct it.

My searches haven't produced any quick fixes. Hope this helps.  Mark

Thanks MarkMCS.

I have no problems with the printer and I think the defender issue is now resolved. You explanation and confirmation of this error was much appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Oneman.  I see threads where the topic starter disappears without letting anyone know if anything has helped with their issue, and that's a loss for all of us.

I'm glad you've got things straightened out.

Take care,

Mark
