I swear W8 is just a total unusable pos

I have a problem with the brightness slider. So I usually control brightness with the two brightness buttons on my keyboard instead of the W8 slider. I have an HP-pavillion.

Until recently, when the past few days I've had to install a few updates my brightness settings always worked fine. However now, the W8 slider won't allow itself to be changed past level zero and level 1 brightness from the keyboard. Now, if I hold down the buttons on the keyboard my screen will go full spectrum, but the W8 slider won't move anywhere outside of lowest and +1 setting.

I can slide it with my mouse manually, however it doesn't have ANY effect. The same goes for the useless W8 settings menu (Windows+I) brightness slider.

No idea what's going on, but this actually causes problems sometimes, with not being able to change brightness the way I want, although I can't always recall what I had to do to reproduce the problem.

Have you tried connecting an external monitor to see if the problem persists with it?

Why does downloading the chipest driver from that website tell me that I don't meet the minimum requirements? That's rediculous...
