Hello,

I have a laptop running Windows XP and am a very cautious user.

In addition I have Panda Free Antivirus and Windows Firewall running and then MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and Panda Cloud Cleaner for removal.

My computer started running VERY slowly and that was followed by the occasional hijacked page.

I have run rkill and all three removal tools separately and removed anything they found, but there is still something wrong - it's just not as blatant as some other viruses I have encountered.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sarah

The virus has shown itself again - micropctek.  I'm going to see what I can find on here about how to remove it.  The usual tools I use aren't working.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Hi Broni,

Thank you for your help!  Here are the things you asked for.

In addition, might you recommend a program to manage the startup items? I read on the site that it is a better option than managing them through the settings.  Even after these initial cleanup steps, the computer is painfully slow.

Thank you,

Sarah

1 Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:105.93 GB) (Free:3.06 GB) NTFS

The above may be one of the reasons your computer is slow. Your free space is only about 3%. It's recommended to have at least 10% of free space.

I'd suggest getting some external hard drive and move some data files there.

As for startups...

Download, and install Quick Startup: http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html
It'll give you options of disabling startups you don't need.

See if a startup is needed here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

Next....

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

p22002970.gif Download Sophos Free Virus Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the icon and select Run
  • Click Next
  • Select I accept the terms in this license agreement, then click Next twice
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish to launch the program
  • Once the virus database has been updated click Start Scanning
  • If any threats are found click Details, then View log file... (bottom left hand corner)
  • Copy and paste the results in your reply
  • Close the Notepad document, close the Threat Details screen, then click Start cleanup
  • Click Exit to close the program

Hi Broni,

Sorry for the delay - I've been down and out with a nasty stomach virus.

1.  I downloaded Quick Startup, but have not yet studied up on what I can/should uncheck.  I will though.  Startup time is about 3 minutes.

2.  I downloaded and ran Temporary File Cleaner with no problems.

3.  I downloaded and ran AdwCleaner and cleaned all recommended items.  Here is the log for that.

4.  Downloaded Junkware Removal Tool, which I have used before. The computer seems to be acting funnier than usual.  It downloads two of everything now.  I opened it and got to the install and it created a registry backup and died.  I tried this numerous times with different downloads, Panda turned on and off, etc. and nothing works.

5.  I downloaded the Sophos Tool, which I have also used before.  I couldn't even get it to scan.  I don't see a way to upload a screen shot, but it says "Error 1606.Could not access network location data."

Thank you again for your help!

Run this instead of Sophos...

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Click on "Run ESET Online Scanner" button.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Hi Broni,

I did everything you asked - but I didn't see anything with the option to scan archives. I thought I might after it installed, but it went right into the scan.  During the scan Google Chrome was still being hijacked.

Here is the report:

Hi Broni,

I reset Chrome (and had also done it before we started working together) and that didn't help at all.  I hated to give in and completely uninstall it, so I went through all of your steps again...and again had no luck with Junkware Removal Tool and Sophos. They just won't work.  ESET is running now and I found the dialog area to select "scan archives." It is painfully slow.  The hijacking virus seems to be stampalive.

I updated my Java - although the newest version is technically not supported with Windows XP.

I'll let you know what ESET says and if it says nothing I will go ahead and uninstall Chrome.

Thanks for everything,

Sarah

Its very sad what happened with your computer. I  also faced similar problem. I got my computer infected with virus though I had Norton™ AntiVirus, anti malware, spyware, firewall pre installed. You can follow these tips to protect your pc or laptop form any damage in future due to virus

  • On a PC, change the CMOS setting of your boot up process from booting first on the A drive (floppy) and then on the C drive (hard drive) to just booting on the C drive. This will not only speed up your boot up process but also completely eliminate the risk of infecting your hard drive with an infected floppy disk.

  • Configure your web browsers to disable ActiveX, Java, and Javascript. You'll lose some of the fun the Web's been known for, but you'll save your computer from contracting a virus and speed up your connection.

  • Use a security conscious Internet service provider (ISP) that implements strong anti-spam and anti-phishing procedures. You can find here the list of secure ISP.

  • Use a pop-up blocker with your browser. Pop-up windows are small browser windows that appear on top of the website you're viewing. Although most are created by advertisers, they can also contain malicious or unsafe code. A pop-up blocker can prevent some or all of these windows from appearing.

  • Don't open email attachments unless you're expecting them. Many viruses are attached to email messages and will spread as soon as you open the email attachment. It's best not to open any attachment unless it's something you're expecting
  • For reference -http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/tips-for-protecting-your-computer-from-viruses                                                              http://home.mcafee.com/advicecenter/?id=ad_ost_htpycavawa

Hope these tips are of some help for you !!

Hi Bronie,

Sorry for being MIA.  I haven't had enough time to sit and work on fixing my computer.

Nothing I did helped...and ESET said the machine was clean on the last scan.  I bit the bullet and removed and then re-installed Chrome.  It has been a day and a half, and I haven't been hijacked by Stamp Live, so maybe it is finally gone.

I was surprised that I got a virus as I understood that Panda Free Antivirus is supposed to be very good.  Is there anything else I should do?  I've updated my Java again...it seems like there is a new update everyday.

Thanks for everything,

Sarah

Good news :)

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.
