Hi everyone, does anyone know if there is a free software that could keep track of the number of pages each user printed on a shared printer? The reason why I am curious is because buying ink is really expensive and I don't use it that often but my housemate do, so I want to figure out the number of pages each user print and figure out a fair price for each user.

Have separate printers.

Neither of the above posts - #2 and #3 - are particularly helpful. One is impractical, the other resource wasting.

Have a look at this -

Actually my suggestion was serious. I see very nice Canon printers at Wal Mart all the time for about $49, so I think that this would alleviate a lot of arguments and hassles.

I have to agree with Rocky Bennett if ink is so much of an issue get your own printer.  There isn't a good way to monitor print jobs on a per user basis unless you are using a print server.

Suggestion number two would be for the group to get a laser printer.  You can pick up a color laser for $200.  The toner cartrides may be $67 to $90, but are good for 1,600 pages.

One issue to consider if you don't use it much you may have cartridge problems, they tend to dry out and have to go through the cleaning process which uses quite a bit of ink!

Thank you everyone for their honest opinion and thanks Chris Cosgrove for your input. One of the link is invalid and I tried papercut already but that only works if every computer has it installed and even then only one person gets to see it.
