Hi, I am concerned that I have a virus or something because my computer periodically ceases to respond and the CPU spikes to 100% and flattens out there at the top for a time, and also the memory spikes up occasionally to 100% when all I am doing is surfing the net. I am running 64-bit Windows 7 with 3 GB of RAM and the CPU is 2 GHz (Pentium P6100). I mainly use the laptop for surfing the net and my apps are Thunderbird (latest) and Firefox (latest). I prefer Firefox but I also dabble in Chrome from time to time, and maybe even IE, although I hate IE. I have found that more than two apps at a time is totally impossible for my laptop to handle. One thing that happens is that Firefox hangs and then either Thunderbird or Firefox eventually gives me the message that some script or other has stopped responding. I click "Remember my answer" and then I click to stop the script. Some time later, it starts responding again. It's incredibly slow and annoying. Something is wrong. I am not sure it is the scripts that are the problem because I have started to have the Task Manager open all the time to watch the CPU and the memory and when these start to spike, my fan starts going crazy, and that's when the scripts all of a sudden stop responding and everything hangs. This laptop has definitely performed far, far, far, far better in the past.

I have run CCleaner and MalwareBytes to no avail. I have the free BitDefender and it really sucks because it does not provide a boottime scan and it doesn't even seem to do a regular scan, it really sucks. I also have the Comodo firewall.

Definitely the Windows Updates hold it a complete hostage and this does not een show up in the Task Manager. This morning, I downloaded the ProcessExplorer.exe, which is a very nice little app and I proceeded to uninstall some software to see if that might help anything. Some bloatware that came with the computer, it's nothing new but maybe it will help.

One nice feature of the ProcessExplorer.exe is that it checks the virustotal.com for all your files. When it does this, it comes up with a report from Tencent, I do not know how reputable, that three of my running executables are infected: firefox.exe, SpotifyWebHelper.exe, and BrYNSvc.exe.  It says that they are infected with Trojan.Win32.YY.Gen.30, Trojan.Win32.YY.Gen.3, and Trojan.Win32.Qudamah.Gen.1. I am not sure how true this is or how to correct the situation if it is true.

Any help would be appreciated, I am thinking seriously about buying a new laptop and making sure to get the operating system with it on a CD (I do not have that with the current one).

Thanks so much,

Z.

There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

Hi Broni,

Thanks! :hello: I downloaded the tools you suggested. See below for the logs.

One note: when I launched the MAlwareBytes Rootkit tool, it gave me a popup that said, "REgistry value "AppInit_Dlls" has been found, which may be caused by rootkit activity. Note: Press 'No' button if you're not sure. If the tool crashes or terminates unexpectedly during a system scan, restart the tool and press 'Yes' should this message appear again. Do you want to remove this value and restart the tool?" I Googled this and determined that I should click No, so I did that and the tool ran fine. I did take a look in my REgistry and found two "AppInit_Dlls" keys. One of them had no value, the other one had acaptuser64.dll as a value. It seems that this is an Acrobat Pro file. I do not have the file on my system. Anyways, that is my note about this.

Hi Broni,

Thanks so much for your help. So, you don't think I need to worry about ZeroAccess?

Here are the logs from the scans. Sophos didn't find anything, so there's no log from them.

It seems like this cleaned up some stuff, which is good. My memory was spiking again this morning after running these, up to 96%, and I got one of those unresponsive script messages again. I googled a little bit about that and the Thunderbird people were saying to compact your inboxes, so I did that and the memory usage went down, so that has been good this morning.

Thanks again,

Z.

I don't see any signs of any rootkits.

"unresponsive script" is not your fault but website's.

Starting with Vista you don't need to worry about RAM usage as RAM is handled in different way than in previous Windows versions.

All you care is CPU usage. If that is fine you're OK.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Flash Player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Make sure you UN-check Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus

NOTE 1: Beginning with Adobe Flash Version 11.3, the universal installer includes the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Flash Player.
NOTE 2: While installing make sure you UN-check any extra garbage which wants to install alongside.

Hi Broni,

Thanks so much. My laptop is running better, although it was still spiking (CPU and memory) this morning and another unresponsive script. I think that some of the scripts are local files, although this one was not. I then figured out there were a couple of programs that had autostarted that I did not want, so I stopped those and now it is running much better.

It is weird, because after running all of those executables, one of the processes that TenCent was complaining about no longer appears (BrYNSvc.exe). That left only two that Tencent was saying were bad, it turns out that one of those I do not need, the SpotifyWebHelper, so that was one of the things I stopped this morning. I also updated my Flash, thanks for the reminder. :)

That leaves only the firefox executable for Tencent to not like. It is strange...I uninstalled it and reinstalled it this morning, but still Tencent does not like it.

Well in any case, laptop seems to be running much better, thanks for all your help!

Z.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:
