Hello, I have an Asus X401A laptop computer. I've noticed every once in a while, when I turn on the pc, I'll get a black screen with the Windows 7 image; below the image a message that says "Applying update operation 24640 of 24640(registry/Machi...."    It's always a very high number and it's different from the usual software updates. Does anyone know why this happens?

Try doing a System Restore, use a restore point prior to the initial download of the update.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

As far as I can tell, this is normal. Most of the time Windows Update requires a restart and the updates are applied upon startup. It's just telling you that which it didn't do in previous versions of Windows.

If the numbers posted don't change this is a problem.  If they do change indicating different updates, this is normal.
