Recently I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro 64-bit in a new partition. Also, I reinstalled the programs I like to use. At some point my web browsers began to redirect to places I don't want to go sometimes when I click links. I don't know what's causing the redirects. I tried removing some browser extensions and then tried different browsers. Then I tried a portable version of Opera that has no extensions and I'm still redirected sometimes. I tried uninstalling some programs. That didn't help. I don't know what is causing the redirects. Scans with MBAM, Adwcleaner, Super Antispyware, and Emsisoft Emergency Kit have never found anything I can clearly blame for the redirects. I have Bitdefender Internet Security installed, too. There was something about a proxy override for *.local (I think?) that was found but I'm not sure that's really a problem. If a program is causing the redirects by a proxy then I think the program would've been found or my proxy settings would've been tweaked but everything seems ok. I want to know if I installed a program that resulted in these redirects so I don't install it again. However, while installing programs I was careful to avoid the extra junk that was offered. Seems like the thing that's causing the redirects should be easy to remove but I can't find it.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Broni,

Before I saw your post I switched off all non-Microsoft services and all startup items and restarted Windows. No trouble so I switched on all non-MS services. No trouble so I started the cycle of activating a few startup items, restarting my computer, browsing the web for a bit, and activating a few more startup items if no redirects. I was down to a few disabled startup items.

Then, I saw your post and followed your instructions in case something else would be found.

I was surprised that RKill didn't like AlwaysMouseWheel. I used AMW in the past and had no trouble. Though, the current version of it seems to not continue running after startup even thought it is set to do that. I've been manually right-clicking it and starting it as an Administrator after Windows finishes starting. Probably will go back to using X-mouse Button Control.

I rechecked the hosts file. There was a hosts.txt file and a hidden hosts file. I didn't think to check the hidden one, earlier. In the hidden hosts file, several blank lines down the page, I saw the entries that don't belong there.

Your "hosts" file has been hijacked.

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
How to start Windows in Safe Mode
Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders, UN-check Hide protected operating system files.
NOTE. Make sure to reverse the above changes, when done with this step.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.
Delete hosts file.
NOTE. (Windows Vista and later only). If you can't delete "hosts" file (access denied) take ownership of "ETC" folder first and then try again: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Restart in normal mode.
Please, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#FixItForMeAlways and click on "Fix it" button to reset your "hosts" file.
Follow all prompts.
Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 users Follow manual instructions for recreating "hosts" file.

Post fresh rKill log.

Was AlwaysMouseWheel noticed by RKill because it is a packed executable?

Possibly it wasn't sure what it was so it terminate it.

It should show back up after restart.

"host" file is back to normal.

How is redirection issue?

With an altered hosts file seems like disabling startup items might not have helped avoid redirects. The redirects must've been very sporadic. Otherwise, would've been easier to see that a startup item wasn't causing the redirects. Usually after the first redirect more happened. The altered hosts file and fake hosts.txt file were dated April 1st. I checked the list of programs I installed on the 1st but none stood out as suspicious. I uninstalled a couple programs, earlier. Maybe I'll try installing them in a virtual machine and check the VM's hosts file.

JRT didn't like the Flexera program (came with my Dragon Naturally Speaking software) that checks for updates. I canceled the scan by the Sophos Virus Removal Tool. The program doesn't have a way for me to limit the scan to the C: drive and I don't want it to scan all 11 of my drives. So far there have been no redirects. I'll keep browsing the Internet.
