Hopefully someone might be able to help.

Im running Windows 7 that was installed on the laptop from purchase, and I cant get Internet Explorer to update

I have all pre-requisite updates as stated by microsoft and still no success. I have run Malwarebytes and Eset Nod32 to make sure there are no viruses etc.

This morning I tried in clean boot mode and disabled Eset whilst installing, everything seems to go OK then I jsut get a msg saying that IE did not finish installing

Any help to get this fixed would be appreciated

Hi there,

Did you try to install IE 9 through Windows update? If yes, did you see any installation errors?

While researching online i came across this: http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2409098

Give those steps a try and see if the issue still persists.

Keep us posted!

Hi cowboy54 :)

If the solutions above didn't work for you (please give a try to each of them) let me know, you might have to use a work-around to install it like I do sometimes.

Sorry havent been at home enough the last few days for an update.

master:  Ive tried updating IE9 & 11 through windows update but it never works. Never get an error message just says update failed. before the other day I tried the online installation and offline without any luck as kept saying it failed to finish installing. Tried the online instalation again the other day and tonight, both times finishes the install, restarts the laptop and when I go back in its back to IE8

quietman:I cant try your fix now as I have found that it installs, but after restart Im back to IE8

any thoughts or new fixes would be appreciated

cowboy54, are you running the Internet Explorer 11 installer with Admin Rights? Right-click on it and select Run as Administrator.

Does that issue occur with all versions...IE9, IE10 and IE11?

OK the rundown of whats been happening

The same two things happen with IE10 & 11  (cant install IE9 in windows 7). Either it doesnt finish installing or 11 looks to have installed but on restart back to IE8

Even when I run the offline as admin it doesnt finish.

quietman: managed to try your xml file fix twice but no such file to be found either time

any other ideas?

If you go in Safe Mode with Networking and run the Internet Explorer 11 installer with Admin Rights, does it works/complete?

Nope doesn't work with online or offline installer in safe mode

Funnily enough it says that I can't install this program and that I need IE11 to install it!

Alright let's see if you don't have damaged system components.

EndqYRa.pngSystem File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system:
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command sfc /scannow (there's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow") and press on Enter;
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%), then copy/paste in your next reply the message that is returned after;

Open another elevated command prompt (like you did for the SFC scan), and enter this command:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

A file called sfcdetails.txt will be created on your desktop. Upload it to ge.tt and post the download link in your next reply.
