Google might have cracked down on extensions that deliver adware and malware, but what about this?

Pretty much everything you install on a system will track you one way or the other. There's limit to complain about "privacy". If you want total privacy, do not use anything technological at all I guess.

They are just trying to keep pace with Facebook. If you use social networking sites...your info is already out there and most likely being sold or exchanged.
