Hi. Trying to find out why the pc wakes from sleep on its own has given me another problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Control Panel => View Network status and tasks => see full map

[=> windows is creating the network map]

=> Windows cannot discover any computer or device

This seems odd to me, since I can connect thorugh my router to the internet (see this post) and I can print wirelessly.

My home network is as Windows originally set it up (with additions for laptops for my kids, not here at present), I am no expert so have not played around with it.

Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received, shuldnobetr

Anyway, thanks for your swift interest and help, shulnobetr

Your Seagate 320GB drive appears to be a cause for concern...status of Warning and "bad block" error messages in Event Viewer, along with backup problems.

I would run SeaTools For Windows - http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/ and then tell us whether it passes or fails.

Hello again.

1. Ran Seatools: though uncertain which test you wanted; after couple of trials, settled on Long Generic - result: pass for the C drive (as noted, D drive not in use)

I hope that clears up the query about disk failures being at the root of my problem, but do say if you want some other test; and I will run chkdsk again when next close pc down.

2. I would, however, note that the "back-up" problems are the result of my not using Windows backup. I used to, but after finding twice that Windows was unable to restore from its own back-up, I lost faith, and switched to using only a proprietary back-up, in this case AOMEI. While the Windows back-up has a schedule, there is no place for it to back up to (the external hard drive is switched off, except for my manaul AOMEI back-ups). The reason for leaving a schedule is that otherwise W7 periodically and irritatingly warns me that no back-up is scheduled. I hope that explains that, and I am sorry not to have gone into this before.

Still leaves my missing network, I am afraid; but thanks for help thus far.

Regards, shuldnobetr

Anytime Windows is not reflecting something that it should reflect...my first impulse is to run the chkdsk /r command...followed by the sfc /scannow command...to rule out missing/damaged files.
