Windows 98 won't read my mouse anymore! Whenever I start Windows. I am greeted with a message that reads,

"Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a mouse now. To attach a mouse to a PS/2 mouse port, you must turn the computer off."

there has always been a mouse attached to the ps2 mouse port and it does indeed receive power from the ps2 port, it is an ps2 optical mouse and the lazer lights up, so it does draw power from the ps2 slot but Windows 98 says otherwise.

Have you seen this Microsoft support article: http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/206002

My apologies, I did leave ps2 out of my original search parameters.

Take a look here at a nearly 15 year old reply to a topic specifically with regards to win 98 and ps2 mouse.

Did you have a chance to swap mice [of course, powerDown, unplug, plug, powerUp - we W98ers know the drill   :)  ]?

I can't remember if W98 & W98SE had INI [win.ini? system.ini?] files that can be edited.  I'll try to find my old W98SE notes.
