Are cameras now nearly as good as a camcorder for video ?

My Sony camcorder is unfortunately broke (well the viewfinder is). Nowhere seems to fix them locally, and Sony want a minimum of £160 !
I noticed that some of the stores have almost none in stock now, and the one guy said its because you can get just as good video footage with a camera.
Any thoughts on this guys ?
Id rather just buy a new camera , as we could do with upgrading ours anyway as its quite old anyway.
My guess is it wont be as good as a camera, but we don't shoot that much anyway as the kids are older anyway.
My budget is near the lower end ..about £160.

Appreciate any views.
