Quick bit of history, I started getting random power downs/restarts while playing games such as world of warcraft, diablo etc. After reserching i seen it was a common AMD driver issue, so i used a program (the name slips my mind) and booted into safemode and removed all AMD related software and files.

Once doing this i began to get BSOD from ntoskrnl.exe, again, while playing games. I have looked on these forums and many other forums and tried countless solutions. I have not overclocked or made any changes, ive removed any applications that are not really needed and updated all of my drivers.

However, now it seems that atikmpag and ntoskrnl alternate on being the culprit.

I have gone over your speccy and MTB report. You have a couple problems I see and it may have something to do with the BSOD. The cdrom drive is having problems. Failing hardware can cause a bsod quicker than you can say "Blue Screen". First thing I would do is check that you aren't using any cdrom emulators. If you do, uninstall them.

For the cdrom issue:

1. press Winkey+pause button.

2. Click on device manager on the left and answer yes to UAC if it pops up.

3. Expand dvd/cd-rom, next click to select the cdrom and right-click and choose uninstall.

4. Next at the top of the device manager screen click 'Action' and click scan for hardware changes. This should reinstall the drivers.

This is a ATA drive. If the above doesn't work then you could try flashing firmware for it. Typically a driver is not needed for cdrom drives it uses Microsoft's. Detach the cdrom and see if the problems continue. if you could upload the mini dump file that would be great too I can take a look at it. MEMORY.DMP032315-18673-01 it should be located c:\Windows\Minidump Also, inspect the connection to this cdrom. The cable strap may be faulty, torn, disconnected or some other problem with it.

Now for your video issue. Again you are dealing with older hardware. You have a HD series 4800 video card. AMD had major problems with cards in these series more than I care to remember. It gone on till HD6000 series. With that said, your information that you posted shows that you installed 32bit instead of 64bit. This may have caused problems. I suggest uninstalling it and reinstalling the 64bit version of the driver from AMD's website.

cdrom information: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=9803

If you attempt a firmware flash be sure to READ and follow the instructions in the zip file before flashing. Again, cdrom drives are cheap these days and IMO going through this trouble is proibably not worth the hassle.

First of all, thank you very much for the detailed information. In regards to the cdrom, last night I disconnected it, I don't need it at all so it won't be missed, I moved my RAM to adjacent slots and reseated the graphics card.

These few things allowed me to play last night without another restart. I will be stress testing today to see how it copes.

If I do get another one, I will upload the requested minidump along with the newest.

Again, thank you for taking the time to reply in such detail. I really appreciate it.

so i had two more resets today, one of them was atikmpag.sys, so i went ahead and uninstalled the AMD drivers in safemode and i installed the 12.4 x64 drivers as they seem to be the most stable set for my card.

Once i done that i got about 20 mins of gametime in when i got another reset with the cause being ntkrnlmp.exe and ntoskrnl.exe

The dump files point to atikmpag.sys file. I am speculating that you're using an old atikmpag.sys file that is corrupt. Back in the day before AMD bought out ATI they had a massive problem with video cards in the early HD series. It started to thin out during the late HD6800 and up and this issue died out with the cards. Video cards now today use amdkmdag.sys file. Worst case scenario, you may need to just buy a better graphics card.

I suggest uninstalling the AMD drivers and Catalyst fully.

Press the Win+pause key. Go to device manager.

Under view select show hidden devices.

In the list you should now see Non-Plug and Play Drivers.

Open that up and in the list search for atikmpag.sys if it's in the list still right-click it and choose uninstall.

Under start button do a search for atikmpag.sys and delete all of them from the system.

Install the new package from AMD that you downloaded again.

If that doesn't work you may need to revert back to older version that seemed more stable at the time. Again, uninstall AMD/ATI drivers and Catalyst and Install a early version 13.1 or 13.9 catalyst from drivers all website.

You might also want to try uninstalling and reinstalling DirectX. 2/3 of the minidumps you linked mentioned it.

For your ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series driver -> http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy2&os=Windows%207%20-%2064

DirectX is still from Windows Update but if not -> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

Good luck

how would i go about uninstalling directx? tried running the download and it just states that there is a better version installed so installation was not required. My friend said it may be worth changing my in game settings to run directx9 instead of 11, so i will be trying that too.

Forget I said that you could. There apparently are some ways but I wouldn't recommend trying it. If the installer states a better version is already installed, that's good enough.

ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DirectX Support:
10.1

Using DirectX 9 in the game you are playing instead of 11 might be of use here. The above is from your Speccy report.

DirectX is going to show an error because the video driver is going bonkers. I doubt it's Direct-X. The drivers for these older cards are terrible.

You're right. I was just providing an alternative incase replacing the graphic drivers didn't work.

So yesterday I gave up and done a fresh windows install, installed the 13.9 driver. All went well, managed to play games without a single issue. However, this morning is tarted playing and after around 30mins i had another restart.

I installed whocrashed and this is what it gave me

On Thu 26/03/2015 10:06:29 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: Unknown (0x00000000)
Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA8003F04420, 0xFFFFF88003EDEE6C, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000001, 0x3)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error.
Google query: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

I have had the same problem on my old computer with the same gpu and it seemed to be a common problem.

I had tried it all at the period but i haven't been able to solve it neither with the help of many people.

Most of people claim the TDR error to be caused by a overheating, but they also say that it can be for many, many causes. Working on Drivers didn't solve my problem, and honestly i didn't find enough will to try to consider the problem as an overheating problem, because in my case only the driver had been restarted and the PC in most of cases was still working. It was just impossible to play games, but the error didn't display only during games, and so i doubted it was an overheating problem again.

At the end, i had no will left and simply threw the mobo (the gpu is integrated) away.

It still points to the video card however I also suspect this might have just been a fluke. Let us know if it continues to happen. Does this happen in all the games you play or just a particular one?

It just happened again with the same error on whocrashed. Its happened thus far while playing world of warcraft but thats all ive played since doing the fresh install/ I will try playing Diablo 3 now and see how it goes.

It may be worth nothing that i stress tested my GPU and the temp got upto 90 for around 30 minutes, fans were running at about 47% the whole time, but there was no restart, the card seemed to be running fine, and when i play games, the card rarely exceeds 75 degrees.
