My daughter's boyfriend hacked into her Windows computer and was transferring data to his laptop.  Now I'm worried about my Mac.  Could someone take a look at this log and tell me if they see anything that looks like a hack?  Thanks.  George

Did he have physical access to your Mac? If not, then I'm pretty sure he didn't hack in to it.

If you're paranoid about it, then do a fresh install of Mac OS X, it'll erase everything on your Mac.

Um... Don't reinstall the OS just because your paranoid. Windows computers are much more vulnerable than Macs. While Macs can be hacked and there have been Viruses for Macs in the past, I don't see anything in the log that looks even close to a hack, and I highly doubt it could or would be hacked anyway. If your still concerned than find out how the Windows laptop was hacked, it could be that your router was compromised and that could be how it was hacked in the first place.

Could the hack be accomplished by a "hidden" remote access such as Teamviewer running in the background?

For the Record:

I had a brand new iMac 24 with all the trimmings when they were new and very exciting about 8 years hence. I used filevault and ran permission utilities almost daily. I decided to assemble my music collection while the bit torrents, limewires and acquisitions were still really pumping. I began to download what became 40 Days of fresh music. I had everything. I had a hundred films, and every SNL. I had Japanese dubs of The Ambiguously Gay Duo.

There were warning signs. The Genius Bar proclaimed "unhackable" adamantly. I took a few extra precautions. Disk Warrior, file scans, that kind of thing...

One night, while I was playing music and downloading, it began. A setting had changed. I used to "smoke a little pot" and was poo-pooed by friend and genius alike. (I appeared like I might smoke more than a little pot. to be fair.)

The adventures that I had with the hacker, literally chasing each other around my system changing setting and passwords before powering off will not be described in detail here. I took every (retail) precaution known, EXCEPT getting a second machine and putting a scrubber of some kind between them. I was stubborn. i wanted my Terabyte or something. I wanted every good Dead Show, and all Mozart's Concerti by the Berliner..

In the end, he routinely could make my screen flash in colors. I fought on. Then one day, with (finally) one of my friends on hand to witness it, a Pac Man looking thing appeared in my itunes pane and started eating as line of text. I immediately deleted the whole file. It happened again after disc maintenance an hour later. I disabled iTunes, and locked down the machine. Power Off.

Early that morning, i booted in safety, as usual, and after running my utilities, and checking ports, etc, i went to read the news, ANT there IT WAS, On MY SCREEN. In an article about Karl Rove. I threw it in the trash with a reflexive flick of the cursor, and after hitting secure flush, it began VISUALLY EATING ITS WAY OUT OF THE CAN. IT ACTUALLY ATE FILES ON MY SCREEN IN FRONT OF MY EYES.

i screamed and hit the power button. NO EFFECT. SO i p[ulled the plug and all was quiet.

Apple told me I was crazy, but I had Apple care, and my IMac 24 was sent to diag/repair in australia. Yes, really.

I got a call from the apple store two weeks later saying, Yes, i could get another machine. When I picked it up, they said there was a "motherboard glitch" and denied the hack! I laughed. The geniuses on hand were evenly split opinioned...

Then, about a week later, I get call at 4am. It's a guy with an Australian accent. He says that he is calling to tell me --off the record- that the creature that ate my files got loose in canberra, or wherever apple was-- AND DESTROYED TWO SERVERS OR MAINFRAMES OR SOMETHING. He said he was calling just because he had read my file, and thought i should know that the hacker/hacker bot/s were believed to be from belarus, and were very real, and were the most virulent infection on record that he was aware of, anyway.

He has a PhD in Comp.Sci and all that i recall -except his laughter- was that he entirely agreed that as with Anything, if we build it, we can break it. the idea that "Macintoshes are Unhackable" is ludicrous, prima facie, and says more about a species pinning it's dreams on it's heroes, it's "style", and the chimera of a dream that it's (our) "unique" intelligence will somehow "save us" and "defeat" the death and decay that is as natural as BLEEPING. [Sorry for the Typos] I only had six or seven dvds back-up.

That was in 2007 maybe. I haven't fantasized that I have spent time on a "secure system" since. USE AT LEAST TWO MACHINES. Beware Album Artwork.

C. Sheen.

Just came accross this- happy to see macs on bleeping computer! : )

But macs are un-hackable? Just check out what can be purchased for the cost of dinner on hackforums under 'Remote Administration Tools' or something like that. If you want to figure out if something is possible, Google as if you want to do it yourself...'think like the bad guys/girls'. I actually read that although macs are less susceptible to random malware (because windows is a more attractive target for mass distribution malware), they are easier to hack if someone specifically wants to hack you (i.e., targeted, personal attacks like an ex-boyfriend). If I find this article again, I will post it.

Also, if the same password was used on a compromised windows machine, the password to not only the local mac, but things like iCloud which syncs everything (how naked celebrity photos got released...remember that?), would be compromised. I would imagine the first thing a hacker would do is delete console entries. I agree a lot would be gained by knowing how the windows computer was compromised. That would give some idea of the skill of the person you are dealing with. But, there are no guarantees. Maybe they used multiple hacks and only the most simple one was discovered...

Personally, I think it is so easy to just back-up documents, photos, music to external drive (or iCloud, maybe they already are backed up), re-format and re-install, that there is no reason not to just do that. Just be sure to check all the files before putting them on the clean computer. The problem is I don't know an easy way to check documents, photos, etc. You could try malwr.com, submit privately, and look for YARA signatures.

But don't feel bad about re-installing. Why take the risk? It takes an hour, maybe, but thats it. Then change all passwords using password manager to create good ones (try keepass x, it works on mac and is free, minikeepass for iphone and CKP chrome extension). I also use Avast on mac. I got hacked by someone I knew on a windows computer, so I installed avast and it found various things and blocked threats when I opened files sent from this person. I did a clean install, which fixed a lot of problems, reinstalled avast and it never has found a single thing scanning or blocked anything when I access files, but does when browsing, which is nice (so I don't think these were false positives). Now, maybe these infections only fully worked on windows and just were kind of sitting on the mac/passing through...but not worth the risk. I would reinstall and use AV software, not worth the risk.

Thank you everyone for the comments, I moved, changed email addresses so didn't get these updates.  To answer a few questions (oh I'm now Mrsgeorge93 had to create a new log in as I don't have access to the old email).  The hacker knew all the passwords as he lived with my daughter, he was a very intelligent man with a degree in Engineering.  She changes passwords on the Mac and it still seems he's getting in and we've wiped the OS system twice.  When we look at the Console there are a ton of entries using Airport, hotspots IMRemoteConnectionAgent, I'm thinking Roland is correct that there's a hidden Remote login.

Here is the latest from my daughter's console when I search just the word "remote".  I went to the local Best Buy and did the same search and nothing came up.  This is from just two quick log ins from today and then she quickly turns her machine off and unplugs the ethernet cord.  Tell me what you think, please and thank you again.

That what you see in the logs are internal communications between the different applications. I don't see anything suspicious in your logs.

If you think you're hacked the first what you do is reset your router and change the router's password and WLAN key.

Change the passwords from your e-mail accounts.

Disconnect from all your icloud accounts, iTunes, iBooks and so on and change the password for your appleid

Download EtreCheck on your mac. Unpack iand move it to the desktop.

Start the application and click on Start EtreCheck. If done click on the button Copy results to Clipboard and paste the content here.

There is nothing suspicious.

Clear the Caches

  • Boot in Safe Mode to Clear the System Caches. Read this Article carefully
  • Boot time in Safe Mode is little slower don't think about it, also the screen flashing is normal.
  • Log in and open the disk utility. On Finder go to the menu bar and select the Go menu. Select from there Utilities to open the Folder. Double Click on the disc utility to open it,
  • Choose your System drive. At the bottom of the disk utility you see on the left side of the Window the buttons Verify disc Permissions and Repair disc Permissions. Click in this order to Repair the Permissions.
  • Close disc utility and restart your mac.
  • That's all, make a new EtreCheck log.

Just a suggestion, even though it has nothing specifically to do with Apples.

You refer to your daughter's boyfriend in the past tense. In most jusrisdictions this kind of behaviour falls under harassment and computer misuse, both of which are criminal behaviour. Why don't you report him, or have her report him, to your local police ?  They generally take harassment seriously even if most local police departments cannot get their heads around computer crime.

Chris,
We've reported it to local, state and federal authorities and they only take reports but no actions. The only thing an attorney would do was file a Cease and Desist Order and that was done. Until large amounts of money is involved, law enforcement will not do anything in regards to hacking or computer crimes. We have tried, so hey what can I say?
