Win7 home premium ( product key COA doesn't indicate 32 or 64 bit, Dell Studio XPS form 2010).

Recently booted to screen that gave option to boot windows normally or do start up repair.

Normal boots results in return eventually to same screen.

repair option starts, gives option to restore(cancel) runs "start-up is checking for problems" animation has been running for about 4.5 hours now..

is this unusual? should i try something different?

I would run a diagnostic on the hard drive...seems that might be the source of your apparent problems.
