Cannot Format Drive

i have 2 40 gig hard drives. a maxtor and the one that came with the pc. i have my os on my maxtor but my maxtor is set to slave and other set to master. do i have to set my maxtor to main before i can format the one that came with the pc? i've tried formatting my c-drive but it gets to about 99% and then says "Windows was unable to complete the format" any help is greatly appreciated

I've never tried to format a master from an OS installed on a slave, but since you can format a master HD while booted from a slave optical drive, I don't think the master/slave business is what's stopping you.

I'm more inclined to suspect the hard drive. I suggest you find out what brand your "other" drive is and Google the manufacturer's website. In the Support section there will be a disk test utility that you should download and run. There also will be instructions on making a bootable floppy or CD.

Why are you formating the master, is there a problem with it?

And if the OS is on the Maxtor, why are you running it as the slave, I would think that it would you would run it as the master.
