Posted 17 March 2015 - 12:11 PM

Good day all.  I am running a Maingear Shift, three years old, plus, with Windows 7 Pro x64.  The computer has been very reliable and I have not recently installed any new hardware, other than to update the vidbox driver for VHStoDVD Version 8 (Honestech).  All Windows updates are installed and both antivirus (Bitdefender 2015 Total Security) and anti-malware (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium 2.0.4.1028) are fully updated.

The computer is equipped with a C:\ drive, which is composed of two WD 600 GB Velociraptors in RAID0 array.  There is also a WD 2 TB Caviar drive (D:\).  I have had two backup programs (Paragon HDMS 12) and EaseusToDoBackup Home Premium) fail backup integrity checks sporadically in the last year or so when writing to Drive D:.  I have run chkdsk or the WD diagnostic utility when that occurred and found nothing but a few minor unused index and security descriptors and a few volume bitmap errors that chkdsk corrected.  WD diagnostics reported no issues.  After that, Drive D; would be alright for a month or so, then a backup check would fail and the cycle repeated.

I decided to backup directly to my WD 3 TB MyBook Essential (USB3.0), reversing my previous weekly backup process of backing up to D: and then copying the system image file to the WD 3 TB drive.  I back up now to the WD 3 TB and then copy the system image backup to D:\.

I decided to check Drive D:\ again with chkdsk /r on Friday evening past.  On Saturday AM, I went to the Event Viewer to see the results.  I saw an error in the Windows App Logs (see attached file: evnterr.txt).  I did know what it meant, so tried "finding" the chkdsk log, and then the Event Viewer became unresponsive.  Relaunched the Event Viewer, and found the log and all was fine except for some unused index and security descriptors that chkdsk fixed.  About 20 minutes later, while browsing with IE11, I had a BSOD.  Rebooted normally and all was fine until yesterday.

Yesterday I decided to check the Event Viewer for the results of a chkdsk /r that I had run on the WD 3 TB backup drive the night before (never had run one before on that drive and thought that if I was using it as my primary backup destination, I should ensure that it was good).  Same error in the Windows log (evnterr.txt), but I was able to bring up the chkdsk report just fine and it reported no errors.  Once again, about 20 minutes later, even though I had warm rebooted after checking the chkdsk log, while browsing with IE11, another BSOD.  This one I captured, I hope (see attached file: bsod-err.txt).

I have since done the following:

1. chkdsk of primary C:\drive (a few unused security descriptors fixed).

2. sfc /scannow.  No integrity violations found.

3. Anti-virus and anti-malware scans.  Both negative.

4. Ran Windows Memory Diagostics.  No error reported while running, but it did state that it would report the results upon reboot, but it didn't, so I went in the Event Viewer to see if I could find the results (see attached file: memerr.txt)

I don't have Speccy installed on my computer - I use AIDA64Extreme and I have uploaded its report of the hardware specs of my Maingear to Sendspace, since the file was larger than the allowable upload limit on this Forum.

https://www.sendspace.com/file/3ejhu9

I did notice today that Windows Firewall had turned itself on again, when, I don't know.  I have to turn it off every few weeks when it turns itself on for some reason.  I am running with the Bitdefender Firewall and I don't want two firewalls running.

Not much more I can tell you.  I did not have a BSOD today after being in the Event Viewer, but then I did not see Event Gatherer error today either (evnterr.txt).  I have no reason to believe that there is anything really wrong with this computer, other than those two unexplained BSODs, but I know enough to know that BSODs are not a good thing.

I am not really concerned - more curious than anything else.  I am not very adept at interpreting Windows Event logs.  I would appreciate any enlightenment that the pros can offer me.  Always eager to learn.  Thank you and have a great day.

Regards,

-Phil

What is Vidbox...why is this driver installed:  VIDBOX Driver (HKLM-x32\...\{2758691A-2CDE-4942-A4AC-0E8F61FE2067}) (Version: 4.0.1 - honestech) ?

You have a corrupt content index but that should not produce any BSODs.

Error: (03/18/2015 09:52:04 AM) (Source: VDS Basic Provider) (User: )
Description: Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004

Above seems to be only item producing BSOD error code above...where the documentation I find all points to virtual setups gone wrong.  I can't tell you anything intelligent about the above two errors or how to overcome them.

To overcome the content index catalog situation...see Content Index Catalog Is Corrupt .

I am curious as to why you chose to employ a software RAID 0.  Any problem with the RAID and you could lose all data/files.

You have a VSS issue with access not allowed...again, I don't really know what this means but I do know that anything involving VSS tends to make me think of hard drive or partition/corruption issues.  See http://kb.macrium.com/knowledgebasearticle50010.aspx .

Louis:  Thank you for your response.  I have not had any further BSODs, but I continue to experience backup issues with both Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite Version 12 and Easeus To Do Backup Home 8.2.  To answer your questions first:

1.VIDBOX - It is a driver used for a device distributed by Honestech with their VHS to DVD software.  You plug a camcorder (Hi8 analogue) or VHS player into it and then to your USB port.  By using the software, you are able to digitalize the analogue signal into .mpeg2 format, which can then be used for subsequent video editing.  I convert a lot of home movies for folks, edit them, and burn them to DVD.  As well I do some HD videography and editing.  I am currently using their latest software.  The backup issues commenced before that driver was updated with the latest software update from Version 7 to Version 8.

2.  I chose a RAID0 array, instead of an SSD with an additional conventional hard drive, because, at the time I was configuring this computer for video editing (purchased from Maingear in December 2011), SSD drives were small, unreliable, and expensive.  I participate in the Cyberlink PowerDirector Forums and the consensus at that time was to avoid SSDs.  That has since changed as SSDs have become more reliable, larger, and cheaper.  The slow spot on my computer was the hard drive.  Video editing required a lot of writing and rendering, particularly HD and 4K, so I wanted to speed up disk performance.  I asked Maingear to install two 600 GB WD Velociraptors in RAID0 array.  I trusted them that they provided the proper solution (software management) as quite honestly it was my first experience with RAID drives and I am no expert, even now, not even remotely knowledgeable.  If I should have some kind of different RAID controller, please advise and I will contact Maingear.

I did indeed have one of the two Velociraptors go flakey about 6 weeks after the purchase.  I got an RMA and Maingear replaced the Velociraptor, which I installed and then booted from my Paragon recovery disk and restored my disk image in an hour.  I do full system images every Friday on both of my computers.  I help folks out who are not sufficiently experienced to know that nothing forgets faster than a computer, so I know the value of regular, recent full system images.  They have saved my bacon several times.

From my original post, you will recall that I encountered the BSODs, while in the Event Viewer, attempted to view chkdsk logs.  For the past year or more, both Paragon and Easeus (I rotate them as the backup program from week to week) have intermittently failed checks after the backup is complete.  Both program report a successful backup but when I go to do an Archive Integrity Check in Paragon or a Check Image in Easeus, the backups will fail the check reporting corrupt files.  I will then run chkdsk or the WD diagnostics on the computer drives and external drives, go back the next day, and the new backup I create will pass the check test.  It should be noted that the chkdsk and WD diagnostics do not find errors, other than chkdsk occasionally reporting some minor Volume Bitmap Errors and usually finding some unused Index entries and Security descriptors.

This problem has been quite frustrating to say the least.  Just yesterday, running Easesus, my backup check failed.  I switched the destination from my WD 3TB MyBook Essential to the internal 2TB WD Caviar drive, created a new backup, and it passed the Check Image test.  I have had the internal drive fail as well in the past, which is why a month ago I finally decided to try backing up the external drive, which worked until yesterday.  I always copied any backup images on the internal drive to an external drive so that a virus or malware would not toast my data.  I have tried disabling my anti-virus, my anti-malware, disconnecting from Internet, doing a hard cold boot before commencing backup operations, but still these intermittent check tests fail for no reason that I can discern.  I should note that I do not use the computer at all during the backup creating and checking.  I have immediately, on one occasion, when this occurred, switched to the other backup app and the backup it created failed the check too, so it is not related to my choice of backup apps.  I ran the WD Diagnostics Utility on the 3 TB external drive last night (Extended Test) and it did not find any errors and the drive pass S.M.A.R.T testing.

I did run the "vssadmin list writers" command, listed in the Macrium article, and it reported no errors.  I am at a loss to figure out what the cause of the problem is.  I will search around to see if I can figure out how to fix or regenerate the corrupt content index catalog.  The link didn't seem to be all that helpful since computer does pass the sfc /scannow, reporting no resource integrity violations.

I would be really grateful for any advice or referrals you might give me, as I am pulling my hair out over this one.  My other computer backups just fine - no check errors.  Last point, I have no indication of any viruses or malware and I do full scans almost daily with Bitdefender 2015 Total Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium.  I also have Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Premium running as well. Any assistance or suggestions would be GRATEFULLY received.  Thank you, Louis, and have a great weekend.

-Phil

Your backup issues and your VSS issues are tied.

Beyond that, I can't say much because you have a hard drive, this exterior device, and a RAID...any one of which could seriously jeapordize the functional status of your install, IMO.  I know how to run diagnostics on hard drives...but I know nothing about this connected device you employ and the only thing that I know about RAID setups and that I believe they are outdated.  Current backup software and current hard drive and SSD technology...make RAIDs seem like something done just because it can be done, but totally unnecessary.

I'm in no position to even check for malware possibilities...this is the Win 7 forum and members are not expected to be able to...or encouraged to attempt...analyses of issues outside the stated scope of this forum.  If I suspected a malware issue...I would initiate a topic in the Am I Infected Forum.

I'm simple :).  When I see "VSS" or "disk controller" or "code integrity"...I think of the most common element, the hard drive.  So I attempt to satisfy myself that it's not a hard drive problem, but rather something in Windows that I can possibly solve.  Sometimes...I'm just lying to myself :), but I try to systematically eliminate the contenders for Problem Cause.

I can't do that with your situation...just not enough knowledge/experience within my grasp.

Louis:

Thank you for your reply.  At least I have a partial answer to my backup woes.  I am grateful to you for taking the time to try to assist me, and I greatly respect that you have been so forthright about your lack of knowledge and experience to address my issues.  So many folks ask you to try this and that because they won't admit that they don't have a solution.

That said, do you have any recommendations of a Forum, here at BC or elsewhere, where I could obtain assistance "repairing" the permissions issues with the VSS and also addressing the corrupt content index file.  I had another BSOD over the weekend.

I apologize for the delay in acknowledging your response.  We had a lot snow here in Cape Breton and clearing it has consumed most of the last two days.

Thanks again, Louis, and have a great day.

What "permissions issues" are you referring to?  The VSS errors are a symptom of a problem, not The Problem...I thought that I had made it clear that I suspect a hard drive problem.  That can be checked out by posting in the BC Internal Hardware forum or by simply running the appropriate hard drive diagnostics on the drives in question.

I've previously posted a link with instructions for overcoming the content index problem, Post #4.  The Search errors are tied to content index errors.

To find solutions...one must begin in the right areas.  What appear to you to be Windows problems...don't appear to be Windows problems to me...and until those other possible areas are checked out, it's difficult to offer "a solution."

Louis:

Very strange.  I did post a reply to you a couple of days ago apologizing for my misinterpretation of your comments.  I did attach an image of the WD diagnostic of the RAID0 array.  Essentially, it saw the RAID0 drives as a logical drive C:\, but not as a single physical drive.  Some hieroglyphics there and the diagnostic tests would not run, reporting too many bad sectors.  I suspect, from what I have researched since, that the WD diagnostics cannot handle a RAID0 array.  It has to be "broken" and the drives analyzed as separate drives.

I am guessing that the Forum must have removed the post because of the image or because of some other glitch, but it is gone, so it would appear to you that I was not grateful to you for your assistance.

I saw an "Access Denied" issue with the VSS or some other service in the MiniToolBox dump and incorrectly concluded that it might be a permissions issues that was causing my backup problems.

Hardware diagnostics were run on the non-RAID0 backup drives and they all check out.  The RAID0 array passes sfc and chkdsk.

I sincerely apologize if I have seemed to be obstinate or stupid.  I did not mean to give any offence whatsoever to you, or to anyone at BC, since you have been kind enough to help me, and even more, because I hope some day to train as a BC Malware Removal Advisor when there is an opening.

Dealing with the corrupt content index, I did stop the indexing service, switch the Start Type to "Manual" and then start the service again.  Didn't see anything happen there, so found some information online as to how to force a manual rebuild of the index.  That I did, and it completed successfully.

QUESTION: Should I go back and switch the indexing service back to Start Type "Automatic" which is what it was when I changed it to "Manual"?

On the issue of the RAID0 array, I contacted Maingear, who built my computer.  I referred them to this thread.  Their Tech Support agreed with you that the likely cause of my backup issues was a Windows issue with the RAID0 array.  Possibilities included a corrupt Windows file(s), bad drive, bad RAID controller, etc, or some combination of issues.  They did remotely install a program called "Argus Montor" which could see the two RAID0 WD 600 GB Velociraptors as separate drives and both drives had all check marks (no errors) for all of the S.M.A.R.T. results, so apparently the two drives are stable.  Their suggestion was to reinstall Windows, and if that didn't work, break the RAID0 array and recreate it. If that didn't work, they would try other tricks.

I am not anxious to reinstall Windows since, as you saw from the MiniToolBox report, it would take me a couple of weeks to restore everything on my computer.  I have a lot of programs.  I also plan to upgrade to Window 10 when it becomes available, so if I am going to go that amount of work and aggravation, I would like to wait and do it with Windows 10.

What I have decided to do is take your advice and get rid of the RAID0 array.  I have ordered a Samsung 1 TB 850 Pro SSD drive and I want to migrate my RAID0 drive C:\ to that drive and then break the RAID0 array and just have a couple of Velociraptors for data storage.

Thank you for all of your expert advice.  I will be in touch to let you know how I make out and I would appreciate your advice as to the Start Type for the Windows Indexing Service.  Thank you, and have a great day, Louis.

-Phil

No need to be apologetic...and I ask questions in a blunt, concise manner...because that's who I am :).

I haven't used the indexing function of Windows...ever since I became aware of the possibility of disabling it :).  IMO, it's of little value, if any...and if it has any value when employing Windows Search...well, I use the Everything search engine if I really want to do database/file searches on my systems.

Let us know how this all turns out :).

Hello Louis.  Thank you again for all of your help.  I called Maingear a few times with questions, but the clone from the RAID0 array to the Samsung 850 Pro SSD went as well as can be expected.  A few glitches to sort out, but I am back online and backed up again.  The RAID0 array is toast and I am just using the two 600 GB WD Velociraptors as storage drives.  When Windows 10 comes out, I will probably look at doing a clean install just to rid the computer of the assorted detritus of over three years of use, as has been wisely recommended.

I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction to solve my problems.  As I told you, Maingear concurred with your analysis.

So thank you again, and I will see seeing you in the Forum.  Have a great day.

Regards,

-Phil

:thumbup2: , glad you got it sorted.  There's not much anyone can do if the RAID has problems...one reason why I don't see them as applicable to today's SSDs and fast, large hard drives.

We can always backup those components routinely and protect our selves from system disasters...a simple strategy but one which many do not employ.

YOU have a great day :), happy computing :).

Louis
