Hi there,

I was having the same (otherwise, very similar problem) to MatadorM83's problem. After accidentally running a dodgy EXE file, I inadvertantly loaded this same bit of malware onto my computer.

Here's what makes it more annoying. I KNEW it was a dodgy exe and was only keeping it to send to Computer Associates virus place to let them know that it wasn't detected by their spyware or virus scanner. When going to right-click on the file and select "eTrust Vet Antivirus" for some reason I got sidetracked and had a brain malfunction. I accidentally double-clicked it!!!

This malware keeps giving you popups telling you that you have spyware on your PC and need to download some of their software. These popups come in the form of webpage popups, toolbar "popdowns" and even taskbar notification popups (near the clock). The other symptom is that my default home page is hijacked and pointed to www.sysprotectionpage.com.

Anyway, I have run through the solution to MatadorM83's Problem posted here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...tectionpage.com
by Miekiemoes.

Many thanks Miekiemoes, it SEEMS to have worked. No malware, virus' or spyware have been picked up by ANY of my scanners now.

I haven't restarted the computer since the all-clear though. I just thought I'd better check. If someone could look for me, my final logs are posted below.... am I clean?!....

Hi chrisjacks,

It looks like you indeed already solved the problem yourself

Just some leftovers in hijackthis to deal with..

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/22f84fe5eb1bd0...ip/RdxIE601.cab

O20 - Winlogon Notify: wintuh32 - wintuh32.dll (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
