So my Windows 8.1 Installation went corrupt after an update for no good reason. I tried reinstalling it via a built in recovery installation, but at the very last step, it failed. Now I'm stuck with error message 0x0000225. My laptop is an HP Envy TouchSmart 15. I can boot off of an Ubuntu Linux 15.04 flash drive to use the computer itself for troubleshooting, but cannot boot off of a Windows 8.1 installation flash. What to do? I've been ripping my hair out over this lol. :killcomp:

Hi StayNoided12, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

If you can access the command prompt in Windows 8.1 with Ubuntu run the commands below one at a time followed by pressing Enter for each command.

           bootrec /scanos

           bootrec /rebuildbcd
           bootrec /fixmbr
           bootrec /fixboot

I can boot off of an Ubuntu Linux 15.04 flash drive to use the computer itself for troubleshooting, but cannot boot off of a Windows 8.1 installation flash.

In order to boot from a flash drive you need to change the boot order so that the USB device is the first device in the boot order, the hdd second.  Having said that, you still have another problem with using the installation flash drive, you will need the product code.  For security reasons Microsoft embedded the product code in the BIOS.  You can't access this without being able to boot into Windows.

Is this computer still under warranty?

Do you have all of your important data backed up to a removable form of media?
