Unsure if these are linked or 2 seperate issues.....the below started happening about 2 weeks ago. Laptop is only 2 months old.

CPU is in excess of 80%+ with this process typically taking about 60% of it and it regularly maxes out my PC at 100%. Browsing to new web pages on average takes around 30 seconds for the page to load - it just whirs away and says "looking up microsoft.com" for ages; browsing to new pages can take anything from 15 - 45 seconds. This is regardless of using IE version x, Chrome or Firefox.

Broadband speed checks come back with what I expect & I've downloaded some huge files and again the download speed is also what I expect. Watching online videos they appear to stream fine, there's no lag - they do take ages to buffer initially but once it plays its fine. My iPhone and tablet load pages much faster, and my work laptop takes around 2-3 seconds to load up the same pages. Plugging the PC into my router with a cable makes no difference. RAM is completely unaffected.

I've tried:
  • Full virus scan with Mcafee & ran spybot & Malware bytes - found nothing
  • Uninstalled & re-installed browsers, disabled add ons, uninstalled and re-installed network card drivers
  • Ran a clean boot with all services except MS ones disabled - makes no difference
  • Ran in safe mode with networking - CPU is normal and browser opens pages in 2-3 seconds....
When I kill all browsers CPU plummets like a stone to idle. I know nothing about wait chains, but the attached is what I see when I'm browsing, - is this normal? There are 18 total parent/child notes under this process.

Can anyone please help, I'm scared I'm going to have to rebuild the machine :(

Edit: Topic moved from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

I have seen this behavior many times in the past; I suspect your problem may be a bad interaction between the DNS client service and an extremely long hosts file.

You could check by taking one of these two measures:

Option 1:  rename the hosts file to hosts.bak, reboot, see if you continue to have the same problem.  You won't have the protection from connection to spammy sites that your long hosts file is giving you, but your problem may be solved.  If the problem isn't solved, you can always rename the hosts file back again.   (Of course, this won't solve the problem if you have some kind of protection software running that will replace the long hosts file as soon as you've renamed it...you'll have to check to make sure that isn't happening.)

Option 2: Turn off the DNS Client Service (in your list of services), and reboot.   If you turn that service off, you won't be able to resolve DNS names on your local network, but most people don't need to anyway.  In any event, if this solves the problem, you'll know what the problem is.

Temp File cleaner removed 600MB of temp files

Sophos did find a Keygen in a folder - its from a really old installer of Nero that I have. I keep all my install files in the same place and it will jave been copied from my last PC, I'll just delete the whole lot as I no longer need it as I have newer CD burning software. I've had that file for about 12 years so I don't think that would be it........

Is there a chance this isn't Malware related given we've ran a lot of scans and found pretty much nothing? I'm going to give Akahan's suggestion a shot & uninstall Spybot so it can't populate the host file with those sites and see if it helps.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
NOTE. Windows Vista, 7 and 8 users right click on procexp.exe, click "Run As Administrator".
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Paste the content into your next reply.

First of all I don't like workarounds. I prefer solutions.

Secondly many people have that kind of custom "hosts" file which is actually good protection and I've never seen it causing excessive CPU usage by svchost.exe

I gave Akahan's solution a shot....added an extension to the hosts file & rebooted my machine. Noticed an instant difference - pages load within 2-3 seconds & I don't see svchost.exe anywhere near toe top of my process usage - it also doesn't have any wait chain. I named the file back to normal, rebooted.......pages back to taking 30 seconds to load, svchost taking 60% of CPU usage & has around 18 child nodes in the wait chain. This has to be related? As a test with the hosts file renamed below is graphs of my CPU. The first one is when I really tried to hammer it - I had 3 instances of firefox open with 5 tabs each - the spikes co-incide with everytime I open a new browser or tab. The 2nd is just one browser with 5 tabs open. In every case I noticed a sharp CPU spike everytime a new page was opened but this then dropped after a few seconds; my average CPU never seemed to be higher than 50% & svchost is nowhere to be seen. Are these graphs normal?

I'm not sure when exactly you ran Process Explorer because it shows System Idle Process (CPU NOT used) at 92.97%

I'd like to see PE log from some time when CPU usage is actually high.

Ok. Since performing the host file swap my browsing speed is now only around 2-3 seconds, and I've had task manager open the whole time and not seen any sign of svchost hogging resources at all.

i deleted all the entries spybot put in the file. I can re-install Spybot which would in turn bring back the entries into the host file (which seems to be causing svchost & the wait chains) & then re-run Process Explorer and send you the log?

That's fine. Leave it alone.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

Broni - I, too, prefer solutions to "workarounds."  The bad interaction between the DNS Client service and very long host files has been known for a long time, as has the fact that it affects some systems but not others, but I've never seen anyone identify what the critical difference is between systems that are affected vs. systems that are not.  If you find it, you may be on your way to a Nobel prize here.  (You'll certainly have my admiration).

If memory serves (and it might not, it's been a long time since I've looked at this issue), the problem occurs when a very long hosts file is CHANGED, the new version is put into the DNS cache, and the old version is still there, making the cache get ridiculously large.  A less offensive workaround MIGHT be to give the command

ipconfig /flushdns (from an account with adminstrative privileges)

when the slowdown is encountered.  Unfortunately, I don't remember if that worked reliably.

Thanks Broni & Akahan for all your help. On this occasion it wasn't Malware related.......just a bulging host file. I'm going to use Malware bytes now instead of Spybot.

You can consider this thread closed. The only thing I'm unsure of is the hosts file I now have is just the standard Microsoft one and all rthe entries are just comments........so does it even serve any purpose?
