The character spacing in MS Word 2011 on brand new MacBook Pro is totally messed up by default

I  t y p e ,  a n d  i t <looks like that. I can fit about five or six words on one line. I just want it to be normal!

Does anyone know how to fix it? I am opposed to changing the character spacing manually, because its not

normal that I would have to condense the fonts the very first time I am using them. Anyway, I made a picture

of the problem, but not sure I can attach it here.

It almost sound like the default character spacing in Word is messed up.

Type some text, then highlight it.

Then goto the Format menu and select "Font...". In the resulting dialog box that opens, click the Advanced tab. What does it show under the Character Spacing section?

If it is anything other than 100% for Scale and "normal" for Spacing and Position, then change then to those values and then click the "Default..." button. That should keep the default to normal spacing.
