did you ever get this working? I'm having the same problem. tried all that was mentioned here, nothing worked yet. trying a repair install of 98. it sees it in Explorer but can't boot from it.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

mini toolbox tells me it needs a newer operating system and so does speccy (did you see we're running Windows 98?)

You posted in Internal Hardware...if it's a hardware problem, this is the right forum.  If it's a Win 98 problem, this is not the right forum.

 

I suggest you try installing a different optical drive...or removing the one currently installed and see if it works in another system, as a start.\
