I am not sure this is the right forum for this question, but I will ask any way:

Is there a way to update only new files to an external hard drive?  just updates any changed files and adds new ones?

Yes specifically the external drive should be connected (always) when creating a schedule backup on specific location as configured. The problem might come as the Macrium backup for incremental/differental feature is for paid versions only. Try the AOEMI bakupper free product instead.
