Hello,

My PC running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 has begun to run very slowly and constantly says to close programs because I have low memory.  I have checked in the task manager and under the processes tab I find several processes running that really should not be. I can "end Process" for each of them from the processes tab of the task manager but they always come back and use more and more memory until the fan starts running and everything slows down to a crawl. The tasks include iexplore.exe *32 at 158,500K, same one again at 153,180K, explorer.exe at 40,408K, dvm.exe, McUICnt.exe, iexplore.exe, MXTask2.exe, taskhost.exe, winlogon.exe, taskmgr.exe, SynTPEnh.exe, taskhost.exe and a few others. In many cases I will look at it and several instances of these same  processes will be running. I have run several scans with Mcafee and Malwarebytes which did not seem to help at all.
Also when I try to download something I get a pop that says "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded". Even if I am just trying to save a photo online it does this.
My screen intermittingly flashes as well.

Any help you can give is much appreciated. Thank you

Hello Gater Country and welcome to BleepingComputer!       :)

My name is Sirawit and I'm here to help you.

Please note that I'm currently in training and my fixes need to be approved first, that may delay our fix a bit, but I will normally reply back in 24 hours.

If I don't reply after 3 days, feel free to PM me.        :)

==========================================================================

Some points for you to keep in mind:

  • Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planned. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.
  • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
  • Periodically update me on the condition of your computer, and provide detail in every post.
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Followtopic.jpg button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • Once things seem to be working again, please do not abandon the thread. I will give an "all-clean" message at the very end with some additional information on how to stay malware-free.
  • Lastly, I would like to remind you that most members here are volunteers, and sometimes "real life" can get in the way of our malware hunt. I will notify you if I know I will need to be away for longer than 48 hours.

==========================================================================

I've submitted my next steps to my instructor, please wait a bit.

Thank you.

If I don't reply back to you in 2 days, feel free to send me a PM.

Hi Gater Country.

:step1: Please follow these steps:

  1. Press Windows key on your keyboard + R. This will open Run dialog.
  2. Type in inetcpl.cpl and press OK.
  3. Go to Security tab and press Reset all zones to default level.
  4. Close the Internet Settings window.

:step2: Then, please download ESET Powerliks Cleaner and saved to your desktop.

  • Right click on the 3.pngand select Run as administrator to start the tool.
  • Read the terms of the End-user license agreement and click Agree if you agree to them.
  • The tool will run automatically. If the cleaner finds a Poweliks infection, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it.
  • If Poweliks was detected "Win32/Poweliks was successfully removed from your system" will be displayed. Press any key to exit the tool and reboot your PC.
  • The tool will produce a log in the same directory the tool was run from.
  • Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

:step3: Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system, download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Right-click FRST then click "Run as administrator" (XP users: click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished, it will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool was run from.
  • Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

Note 2: The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory the tool was run from). Please also paste that, along with the FRST.txt into your next reply.

Thank you.
