Ran malwarebytes and found 6 issues. I clicked fix issues and re booted. One of the issues was a problem going online...the bug changed settings to proxy setting. I noted a new folder on hard drive called AVENGER, and inside was one file called client.exe I deleted this folder not recognizing this folder as one I normally had on the computer. Now upon reboot I get this message:

windows cannot find c:\documents and settings\RAY\local settings\Application Data\Browser extensions\Client.exe

Make sure you typed correctly...etc.

I can close this box and computer runs fine..goes on internet, etc. No problems. I rescanned with Malwarebyte..shows no infection? How do get rid of this annoyance??

Please download AdwCleaner.

  • Double-click the adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click Scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click Cleaning.
  • When the cleaning process is over, click Logfile and a Notepad window will be opened.
  • Please post the contents into your next reply.

Run Autoruns again, as Administrator.

Select the Task Scheduler tab.

Right-click and delete the following entries:

Run Tasks.job

Client.job

Check Updates.job

Restart the computer

Then run Autoruns normally and delete those entries.

Still no luck?

By the way, I just noticed you were using XP. Forget about running as Administrator, as I thought you had Windows 7 or 8.

And why don't you have SP3?

Just so you know...it is not uncommon to encounter errors or issues with programs attempting to open when booting into Windows after a related file that was set to run at startup or as a scheduled task in the registry has been deleted. Windows will try to load that file but cannot locate it since the file may have been removed inadvertently, during the uninstallation of a program or after performing a scan with security tools. However, an associated orphaned registry entry (remnant) still exists and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message.

You need to remove this registry entry or scheduled task so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads. Phantom010 provided one way to do that.

If you're going to keep Autoruns (which I recommend), be careful using it and be sure to read:

.
-- Note: AutoRuns is a tool for advanced users since it does not have the ability to recognize unsafe or dangerous items...it only displays what it finds.
