This is my story...

So back in november I bought this DIY black bundle deal from newegg for like $475 it included:

Biostar TA970 Motherboard

AMD Vishera Quad Core 3.8GHZ Processor

Nondescript Case

500W PSU Nondescript

Nvidia GTX 750 ti 2gb

1tb Western Digital Hard Drive

128 GB Sandisk SSD Hard Drive

1 Super Writemaster Dvd Drive

2 x Extra Case Fans

Not a bad deal right?

WRONG

To start with after assembling all of these components it quickly dawned on me that none of the required (molex?) power connectors were long enough or plentiful enough to power what was inside of the case, luckily my brother has built a computer in the past and had a spare adapter hub cable of sorts and I made it work.

So crisis averted right?

WRONG

PSU Instantly blew when I turned it on...crap

RMA to newegg, wait a couple weeks get another PSU

Package arrives

Plug in, powers up

YAY

Go into bios, set default boot device, reset default bios values, begin windows installation

I think everything is going swimmingly

Installing drivers thinking I am homefree when all of a sudden..

the freezing begins...

Not giving up I tirelessly search forums and formulate different ways to substantiate my computer problems into a algorithmically congruent mesh of god knows what

For days I search, not being wholly satisfied I began to replace parts in hopes that everything would be solved

Return to newegg, RMA's ALL EXPIRED 3 DAYS AGO

Crap...my fault....should have done it sooner....don't give up

So I go through 2 obvious first steps of rectifying these problems

1. Re-installed windows

2.Installed Windows on another Hard Drive and booted from there

No luck

Then I disassembled and reassmbled the entire computer, with air duster and grounding and all the necessary components

Took the cpu out, cleaned off the factory paste. Then I (artfully) applied brand new thermal paste to it and reseated it

No luck

So, guess I need to replace parts with my own money

Replaced the RAM

Still freezes

Now let me describe this freeze in further detail before I continue, the computer acts as if it operates normally anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours and then it just Hangs

No BSOD

Just frozen, nothing works to get it working again until I do a hard reset

So I replace the RAM, no luck

Then I replace the graphics card, no luck

Then I ran out of money, man im a shmuck

So what can I do when I have no money? Oh I know I will install linux to another hard drive go in and see if it crashes

No luck

So then I try installing it to a USB and just running off the USB without installing, and I haven't had any issues since....

Why is this the case?

I don't know what else to say about my story, if you have any more questions please ask.

I wan't to know what I need to do, but my gut is telling my to replace the mother board or the CPU...but I am so broke I need to make sure before I commit

Edit: Computer just crashed again while running on USB, so thats not working right either

Any ideas?

So a little bit more to my story

I was using a windows help file to sort through different devices I could disable on the computer to help me pinpoint the problem

So after doing this I reset the computer

However when It came back on the USB ports kept disabling when windows would load

My keyboard and mouse no longer work

I saved the settings to disable the usb ports on loading windows...DOH!

So now I can't get back into windows

Any tips or tricks for fixing this through my linux stick, I can still access the drives I just can't log onto windows

so I can't use any windows diagnostic programs like you are asking

any help is appreciated

last resort is I guess I could reinstall windows go through all that then run the diagnostics

Well I am a bit confused here to be honest.  Maybe try doing a system recovery with the windows cd.or simply do a complete reinstall if your having so much difficulty.

Is it "hard locking?" When it locks does the mouse lock too?
If so it sounds like it may be a defective motherboard or cpu. Probably the board.

You can check some settings and see if by chance you are running into issues with cpu boost by disabling core boosting in your bios if your board supports it.

You can also try to flash your bios by following your manufacturer guidelines. However I would suggest only trying this from outside of windows if the manufacturer has an option to do so from within. This is because you don't want it to hard lock while its in mid-flash.

Reduce everything down to one stick of ram, cpu and hard drive only and see if it runs ok. You could also have a bad ram slot.

You should also test the voltage coming out of the power supply with a meter or power supply tester to ensure you're getting proper voltage.

Yes it is hard locking with no blue screen, only hitting the reset or power button can bring it back.

I will try disabling regular hard drive, I also tested all the ram slots, different sticks of ram and different configurations of each

I believe I am getting the proper voltage, but I was considering getting a slightly more powerful PSU

I will report back once I disconnect everything and try it out, and ill try and find a voltage meter

Hi Joe9181,

I don't have an answer to your specific problem. But, I believe it's a bad idea to have a no-name PSU in your system. The PSU is very important and if you have a low-quality one, then it probably has a higher chance of taking out other components with it. I advise that if you decide to get another PSU, you check professional reviews (those who have the needed tools to thoroughly monitor and test a PSU).

Well the replacement PSU I got is just not a name brand one however it is guaranteed by newegg, the Iron Egg Guarantee or whatever it is

I do however agree I need a more hefty PSU probably 600w and Name Brand

Edit: Also I am running tronscript and malwarebytes to help eliminate any virus or repair issues, will report once those are done. Chilling in safe mode with networking at the moment to see if it crashes again.

Edit #2: Also was monitoring my CPU temps last night as I played battlefield 4 for an hour online, not once did the temperatures get above 30 degrees celsius.

Later on I ran a stress test on my CPU for an hour, the temperatures never went above 30 degrees celsius.

However, when I am just browsing around on the internet my CPU temps jump up to almost 60 degrees celsius! Strange?

Any help, is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

So, after some more perusing I have discovered a Default setting on my motherboard that was Over Clocking my CPU by 0.1 MHZ.

This was confirmed by monitoring the frequency to each core in the AMD Overdrive program, my CPU was holding a Steady 3.9 MHZ Frequency even though it is only rated for 3.8 and is not necessarily conducive to being overclocked as it was a relatively cheap CPU.

The frequency now fluctuates between 1.4 and 3.8 MHZ as it should depending on the load of the cores, more than likely this has solved my problem.

I will report back if anything else goes wrong

Kind Regards

Joe

Joe,

Do you have RAID enabled in the BIOS?

If so, you can disable that.

You don't need it... unless you are using RAID in your setup, from what I read in the thread so far... you never mentioned needing a RAID setup.
