Hey guys.

Bit of a baffling situation here. My internet for the past 2-3 weeks has been randomly disconnecting during the evening (usually). When it disconnects it actually doesn't say in the bottom right hand corner that it has disconnected. It still shows the full bars and no yellow exclamation marks. But I go to load a page and it tells me the page can't be loaded. So I right click and select 'Troubleshoot Problems'. The first few times I did this restarting the wireless adapter would fix the issue. But now I am finding that it makes no difference. Only when I completely restart my laptop does everything reset and the internet comes back fine. I know it isn't the network because I often connect using my phone when this happens and I have no issues on my phone. I have tried using a cable when this issue occurs and most of the time the laptop still can't connect me with my cable plugged in.

The only error messages that my laptop wireless adapter when troubleshooting has ever given is 'Incorrect IP address' and 'Unable to connect to the internet'. Using the complex problem solving options in the troubleshooter doesn't make a difference. Would really appreciate some input here as it is really irritating, especially if it happens more than once a day.

Requested Information:

-My laptop is an ASUS R500A Windows 7 Home Premium.

-The laptop is usually connected via a wireless adapter.

-There is a router about 1.5 metres from laptop. It is a Ruckus 802.11ac WiFi router that connects to our company. I live in a college that has all our internet provided (140 people) provided for by this company and we have access via an ethernet port and now through these wireless routers.

-Internet is DSL2.

The first 2 things I do in this situation is: uninstall the wireless from device manager and flush the dns before rebooting.

To uninstall wireless: In device manager - click the arrow beside Network adapters, right click your wireless, click uninstall.

To flush dns: Click the windows button, type cmd in the search, in the list right click cmd, click run as admin, then type ipconfig /flushdns, hit enter. should get a message it's done it.

Also, I noticed you have OpenDNS as your dns servers but only have the 222.222 configured. The other is 208.67.220.220, if you wanna change that as well.

Then reboot.

See if that clears it up. The other thing you should do is if ask if other people are experiencing the same thing.

Hi CaveDweller2,

Thanks for your suggestions. I will do as you have suggested and see if the issue occurs again tonight.

I have asked around and no one else is having the same issue. I have found that while mine is disconnecting the guys near me have internet with no issues.

Will post back. :)

Ok I did all you suggested. Yesterday it was fine. Today it randomly disconnected again and only when I restarted did it get back to normal.

Try doing the ipconfig /flushdns thing again, remember run as admin.

Since the issue doesn't seem to be your computer, you aren't losing connection with the network. I have a feeling it's out on the net. It might be that OpenDNS servers are the best for you. You can run a test https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm is one of the better ones. If the flushing of DNS works try changing them, see if it gets better. Bad thing is you'll need to test them for a bit to see, which will be aggravating or changing them will work first thing lol.

I did the ipconfig flush again.

Also ran the GRC and it gave me a green tick for everything except:

-Only the built-in default resolvers were benchmarked. It says here something about a custom list. Can you please explain this to me, how to do this and why it might help improve things?

-System has only ONE remote nameserver configured. Unfortunately I can't do anything about the second given I have no control over the ISP we are using or how the internet is provided.

What do you think is the issue here? You said it isn't my laptop but if that's the case how come I am the only one with this issue?

Many thanks.

-TDK

First of all, I am sorry I said here run this thing and didn't tell you jack about it or how to use it. It's not hard to figure out as I'm sure you saw. It builds a list and you click the Run button. I have never let the build a custom list run before because it take 36 minutes and I'm soo much a TL;DR(too long;didn't run) type person. But I am running it now. And will be able to advise you on it when it's complete. But I click the Tabular Data tab and that gives you the DNS servers that are best for you.

According to your MiniToolBox post you aren't using the DNS servers provided by the network you are connected to.

 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 208.67.222.222

                                            208.67.222.222

That is an OpenDNS server. Are you located on the east coast west coast? or closer to one than the other? I ask because what you are describing to me sounds like a DNS delay. Your system is trying to resolve addresses and it reaching a time out before it's resolved. This will get worse in the evening when more people are home and using their connections. So I'd suggest you change it to your ISP dns for now and see if you still have the issue.

Does flushing the DNS help? <<--answer that

To change the DNS - Down by the clock, right click your wireless icon and click Open Network and Sharing center. on the left side click Change adapter settings, right click your wireless connection, click Properties. In the list click Internet Protocol version 4 and below that click Properties - It should have 'Use the following DNS server addresses' ticked and have numbers typed into the boxs. If you click Obtain DNS...etc that will set it to use the DNS of the network you are connected to.

The solution to the problem

Follow the instructions to change the link speed to 100 Mbps Full Duplex:

  1. Click 'Start' and then click on the 'Start Search' box.

  2. Type 'ncpa.cpl' and then press 'Enter'.

  3. Right-click on the ‘Gigabit network connection’ and then click ‘Properties’.

  4. Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab, click on the ‘Link Speed & Duplex’ under ‘Property’.

  5. In the ‘Value’ drop-down menu, select ‘100 Mbps Full Duplex’ and then click ‘OK’.

Hey CaveDweller2,

I haven't had the issue since flushing the DNS so I think you might have hit the nail on the head there. Thanks. :)
