I am setting up a brand new officejet pro 8610 via usb, once I reach the stage where the software asks to connect the usb, I notice in the lower right next to the time, the device installation starts. Upon clicking on it, I see drivers being search for by windows updates, then one of them fails with a red x. After this the hp software now tells me the install was unsuccessful. Is the point of the software not to install the drivers or am I missing something? Any workarounds for this? I am now getting into tech stuff so any explanations into what happens there when the device is plugged in would be helpful. I downloaded the latest software from hp website. Using Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

Are you connecting the USB cable to the printer before the software requests it?

Was there an HP printer previously installed? Were the drivers for that printer removed prior to attempting to install the new printer?

No previous printer installs were done because this pc was recently restored to factory and fully updated. I connected the usb when the installer asked me to do so.

Did this new printer come with an installation disk? If so are you using it? If not is there a reason?

This looks like the correct download

is this the one you are using?

Can you verify if you have the following two files

USBPRINT.sys

located at Windows\system32\drivers   24.5 KB (25,088 bytes) v6.1.7600.16385

USBMON.DLL

located at Windows\system32\    44.0 KB (45,056 bytes) v6.1.7600.16385

Type Regedit in the Seach box and browse to this registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\USB Monitor

Is USBMON.DLL in the USB Monitor subkey?
