Hi,

I've been having trouble getting the latest Windows Updates to install on my ASUS laptop.  Previously they would install okay but the last few updates always hang about half way through the install and even if I leave my computer on all night still no full install the next morning.   I tried running an sfc/ scannow command but I very quickly get a failed message stating they could not perform the requested operation.  Normally I would just go on without the updates but for some reason my computer doesnt peform as fast when their are pending updates that need to be installed.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi CarlMcGee :)

At what % of the scan does the SFC fails and throws you the error message? Also, which version of Windows are you using, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1? Follow the instructions below as well.

3Al62Pm.pngMiniToolBox
  • Download MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;
  • Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:
    • List Installed Programs;
    • List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;
  • Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;
  • Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

Well I just got home from work and much to my surprise it installed 41 updates to my Microsoft Office program and Windows Defender.  It remains unable to install any updates to Windows 8.1 OS however.  The update it wont install is (KB2976978).  This time instead of freezing mid install it gave me a specific error code #:  80073712, which after a quick google search is a reference to the windows component store being corrupt.

To answer your other questions, I have Windows 8.1 and sfc/ scannow is not getting to any % it pretty much does this:

"Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time."

Then after about 15 seconds it says:

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

This happens without any % being displayed at all.

Do you still want me to run MiniToolBox even though we have it narrowed down to a specific error code?

Can you boot in Safe Mode with Networking, and run the command from there?

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/#windows8

And yes, I would still like a MiniToolBox log :)

The command did the same thing in Safe Mode with Networking.  Here is the results of the MiniToolBox:

Alright, can you open another elevated command prompt (with Admin Rights, like you do to run the SFC command) and enter this command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Let is complete (it can take a while), then let me know what message is returned after the scan.

Alright Carl, let's try something.
  • Open an elevated command prompt (with Admin Rights, like you did for SFC and DISM);
  • Enter the following commands: net stop bits and net stop wuauserv;
  • Once done, go in C:\windows and delete the SoftwareDistribution folder;
  • After that, go back in your command prompt and enter net start bits and net start wuauserv;
  • Restart your computer;
After the restart, try to enter the DISM command listed above once again.

The "net stop bits/net stop wuauserve & net start bits and net start wuauserve" commands were successfull.  I also deleted the requested folder. Unfortunetly, after I restarted my computer and tried to enter the DISM commands again I got the same (Error:  14098  The component store has been corrupted) as before.

Let's try another DISM command, well two actually. You'll enter them one at the time, and copy/paste the result for both here please.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Conflicting results:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

(almost instant results on the scan)

No component store corruption detected.

The operation completed successfully.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

(pretty short scan)

================100.0%==============

Error 14098

The component store has been corrupted.

The DISM log file can be found at C:/Windows/Logs/DISM/dism.log

Hi - Just a minor idea .......

I have had a couple of clients with Win 8.1 with the same problem recently.

Only one idea worked ..............

Select "Download updates, but install when I want to", Next > Open the downloads, and only install one Update at a time (at times you may get 2, but no more)

It is a pain, but I found it works ............

Update:  After no obvious solution to this problem I reset my computer to facotry default condition.  I checked right off the bat to see if sfc /scannow and dism would work and they both did.  So I proceeded to beginning the long process of applying all the new windows updates.  I got a lot of them done.  (i only downloaded one at a time).  Eventually about 5 hours later, I started running into problems again this time when I go to the windows update screen it doesnt even show the updates it just shows a circle of dots spinning in a clockwise rotation like it will load them eventually but it doesnt.  I've rebooted my computer to no avail and I've run sfc /scannow and it's found nothing wrong.  I'm beginning to think their is something wrong with Microsoft Windows Update and not my computer.  I think there is probably an update package that doesnt play nice with certain computers and causes update problems.  Pretty frustrating.
