Hello. I have been researching this issue, and found a topic that began on this site, but was unresolved due to lack of responses. I have been having an issue where my laptop fails to fully boot after logging in. It shows a black screen, and the cursor is active, and I can bring up the task manager, but that's about it. I have tried once to do a system restore to a previous point, but it did not fix the issue. I have a lot of files that I still need on the computer, so that is an issue.

It is an HP envy, not sure the number, but I'll grab that when I get out of work. So far I've tried the reset to a previous point (didn't work), and I've tried to troubleshoot the issue through the safe boot menu, which failed to work as well.I currently have the laptop in the safe boot mode.

I had exactly the same problem about a month ago and it was caused by vosteran. If you have an anti-malware program bring up task mgr and right click the task and "Open file location" and run the executable. Malwarebytes fixed it for me.

You can get to safe mode and I assume that means you can see your screen in safe mode. Good.

You can backup your important files to the Cloud, DVDs, or external drive.

Download and install the display adapter drivers supplied by HP:

Edit - I missed the above post re Vosteran -- hope it works

thinks - I wonder how it manages not to get zapped with a System restore ..

Wow, I appreciate the replies, and I'm sort of relieved by them. I'm in class right now, but I will try most of these things as soon as I get home.
