What sort of error message does it display when you try to update?

The store works fine,no error message. The problem is that I can't find the option to update it manually, and it doesn't give any notification to update it.

Okay I misunderstood your question. You can't update the play store app itself. The OS will update it when Google pushes the update. It's one of the few apps that are system apps and automatically updated without user intervention. I can't think of the others at the moment that update without user action. But it's not many.
