I am a scrabble player and use a word study tool called Zyzzyva.  I downloaded the new 3.0.3 version two days ago and ran it successfully.  The next morning when I clicked on the desktop shortcut the shortcut immediately vanished.  When I checked the file folder zyzzyva did not have an .exe file.  I uninstalled and ran CCleaner, Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes.  Since then I have tried downloading the program repeatedly without success.  Everything installs correctly but is missing an exe file to open the program.  Here is the NASPA website link:

Hi jammenz, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Can you see this program in Programs and Features in the Control Panel?

What comes up if you type this in the Search programs and files box?

Yes, I see NASPA Zyzzyva 30.3 installed today (yes, I tried reinstalling it again).  When I click on the desktop icon I get a pop-up Missing Shortcutwindow that says "Windows is searching for NASPA Zyzzyva 3.0.3 exe.  To locate the file yourself browse".

Then it changes to a Problem With Shortcut window "The item 'NASPA Zyzzyva 3.0.3 exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly.

Nearest match based on size, date, and type: C:\Programdata\oracle\javajavapath\java.exe

Do you want to fix this shortcut to point to this target or doyou just want to delete it?

Please answer my question regarding what is found when you type the name of this program in the Search programs and files box.

Try uninstalling this program in the Programs and Features in the Control Panel.  Do the search for it in the search files and folders to see if it is still listed there.

What boggles my mind and what I think is the key problem here is that the Zyzzyva shortcut disappeared when I clicked on it after it had been working fine the previous day..  The .exe file must have then vanished along with it leaving a file folder.  Now when I download Z... I don't get the full program.

Sorry, I thought I had.  I find NASPA Zyzzyva 3.0.3 in Programs and Features.  I also find it when I do a Search Programs and Files.  However, the program will not open as it is missing the application .exe file.    When I uninstall the program it is no longer listed.  Something is preventing me from downloading the full program as I do not get the bold Z icon of the program (and it's exe file) when it installs.

Uninstall this program, then see if it still appears in the Search programs and files.

It does not appear in Search programs and files.  I am, however, going to delete study files that I had created when the program was working just in case they are somehow interfering with the installation process and then will attempt another install.

So a new install after deleting my study files did not change anything.  My desktop icon that is created is a "Location: NASPA Zyzzyva 3.0.3 (C:\Program Files (x86)\NASPA Zyzzyva 3.0.3)"

I successfully installed the Z.. program in safe mode.  I could tell it had installed ok because the Z logo finally showed up on the desktop icon.  When I restarted in normal mode and clicked on it the icon again disappeared and no exe file was found in the file folder.  I will continue to explore my safe mode options and report back.  As you saw on the Facebook page I do need to access the internet for lexicon licensing approval.

I again installed Zyzzyva in safe mode and loaded the free available lexicons.  It works fine in safe mode.  But when I restart in normal mode and attempt to open the Zyzzyva icon it disappears from my desktop. The folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\NASPA Zyzzyva 3.0.3 then no longer has an application exe file.  This is most baffling.  I'll continue to post elsewhere and report back if a solution is ever found.

Let's try doing a Clean Boot to see if a Service or Startup item is causing this.

***This is a diagnotic tool for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.  This will not repair your computer, but it may point to where the problem lies so that a repair can be made.***

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

Step 1

(1)  Click on the Start orb, then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

(2)  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

afterstart_zps02764513.jpg

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

Step 2

(1)  Click on the General tab.

(2)  Click the Selective startup option.

(3)  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

msconfig_zps77b1ef82.png

Step 3

(1)  Click on the Services tab.

(2)  Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.

(3)  Click Disable all, this will remove all of the check marks in the Services list, then click on Apply, then OK.  Click on Restart in the window that opens.

Caution:  I repeat, by disabling the Services your antivirus will not be active, for this reason I suggest that this process not be run while online.

msconfig2_zpsef3c4759.png

If the problem does not reoccur after the reboot this means that there is a Service which is causing this proble, continue with the process of elemination to find the Service which is causing this in Option A.  If the problem does reoccur after the reboot go to Option B.

Option A

**The following is a process of elimination to find the Service or Startup item that is causing your problem**.

*  If the problem does not reoccur after the restart go back to Services and place check marks in half of the boxes and restart the computer.

*  If the problem still does not continue return to Services and remove the check marks that were added, then place check marks in the remaining half of the boxes and restart the computer.

If the problem resumes after a restart in one of these halves, you will procede with this process in the half where the problem occurs.  If this does not continue in either half you should repeat this process in Sartup

*  In the half of the Services that the problem is found, remove one check mark at a time and restart the computer to see if that  is the Service causing the problem.  Continue to do this with the Services untill the service causing this problem is  found.

Option B

Search Startup itmesIf the problem is not found in Services, remove all of the check marks, click on the Startup tab and repeat the search process there.

Caution:  If this is a laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

If this problem is found post the Service or Startup item that is causing it.

When you are finished using the Clean Boot go back to System Configuration and click on the General, then click on Normal Startup, click on OK, then restart your computer.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Problem solved, thanks for all your help.  I installed a new antivirus Panda Pro and it found a trojan: Trj/Genetic.gen

After Panda had cleaned my system and a restart I was then able to install Zyzzyva and get the lexicons.
