Maybe we need more information what ' file type ' (what is the file?) are you trying to associate - and what ' program ' are you trying to associate the file to?

If you are willing to take a few extra steps, you can reinstall Windows 98. Believe it or not, a Windows 98 reinstall is basically like Windows 8's refresh tool. All your data and programs are kept, then Setup reinstalls all the OS files (and I think registry too).

I was trying to get mp3, wav, & mid to open with Windows media player, it was currently on Winamp, but thanks to the windows 98 auto patcher I ran after installing 98 back after getting my drivers I just opened the icon for wmp and it asked if I wanted associations during first run setup. problem solved
