Hi, got a good one. This system belongs to a friend of my wife. I told them I would try to help, but this is way over my head.

They had some problems and took it to a "big box" store to have it fixed. After 3 attempts and selling them Sophos it still isn't right. Scaned and cleaned PeeacMem-A and Mal/ExpIS-BU with Sophos but it is still trying to connect to Kabo-search.com/search.php, Sitesatistic.net/www/delivery/ajs.php, and tosearch.biz/search.php. Sophos also is blocking inbound traffic that shows as blocked Mal/FBScam-A and CXweb/ExpFL-A.

Also the Office programs won't open, coming back with "cannot open "xxx" file is corrupted"

A scan with MalwareBytes came back with no results.

I have used Defogger as requested, and I am sending FRST logs. Any help is greatly appreciated. I understand to do nothing else with the system until I hear from you.

Best Regards,

-Joe

The system needed a reboot.

==== End of Fixlog 13:04:09 ====

Rebooted and downloaded AdwCleaner from your link. Ran scan and realized I had not closed firefox. <sigh> attached Log R0 is the result.

Reran scan as instructed, all programs off, browsers closed, attached log R1 is that result.

I reviewed the scan log and ran Clean.

Computer runs faster now. Wow faster.

I typed a test document in Word and Excell, saved it. Opened fine.

Older saved documents in Word and Excell still will not open, I dont know if you want to go down that road, or if it is a different topic.

I really can't express enough how much I appreicate your help.

-Joe

nasdaq,

Also, as I am now checking other things to see what works, I opened the "Pictures" folder and see HELP_DECRYPT. A quick search points to CryptoWall. Thoughts ?

Best regards,

-Joe

I do not know when and what you did to clean the CryptoWall infection.

Read about it.

If your pictures were infected then there is nothing we can do about it.
Hope you have a good backup.

When I ran Security check Sophos blocked NirCmd. I don't know if that is native to the check program or not.

---------------

No as I orig. said, the owner took this system to a big box store (staples) to get it fixed. (3 times actually) . When she couldn't open her office programs she asked me to try.(she is done with them.....)  When I saw the condition it was in I reached out for help.I have no idea what they did, but I know better then to flop around inside something I know little to nothing about.

If I had not found Bleeping Computer, I would have told them to get rescue discs from HP & forget about trying to fix this install. Thank you. I really can't say that enough. She knows you are actually fixing her computer, not me, she  just isn't comfortable following the instructions.

Computer is running fine. Better than fine, actually.

Best regards,

-Joe

If the backup files save date is prior to the infection they should be clean.

If they do not open then they were crypted and nothing can be done about it.
This infection only encrypt the file it's not a worm or trojan.

On the link I gave you previously
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/cryptowall-ransomware-information

Have a look at the CryptoPrevent Tool option.

Thanks, looking.

Wow, the bad guys just keep getting better & better, don't they ?

I'm going to suggest they invest in the premium version, from my conversations with them I gather they are computer users, as long as things work all is ok.......when not, panic !  (explains the trips to the fix-it store.) I really want to "user proof" the system as much as can be so this dosen't happen again. Any suggestions are appreicated. ( I know nothing is 1d10t proof.)

Thanks for the time you are spending on this.

-Joe

Amaizingly, "The best I can offer" is the gold standard of information all in one link. Outstanding. Many thanks.

This system is running, as far as I can tell, perfectly. Fast, very fast. No slowdowns or crashes. I really don't know how all the programs ran before the problems, but everything seems good now.

Kinda sad I have to give it back.....I'm using an old Dell E1505 XP machine I converted to Mint Mate 17.1.

The one thing I did without consulting you first was to download LibreOffice to try to recover the documents. (This was before our crypto duscussion.) As you already know, it was futile. I doubt they will use it, and plan on removing it. ( Sorry should have asked first.)

Where do we go from here?

All the Best,

-Joe

If I remember LibreOffice will install some PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed without your consent.
You should run the AdwCleaner tool just to make sure all is clean.
