Hello, recently I encountered an issue with my PC. Specifically, various TCPip connections are being made to various sites (Akamai, Amazonaws, and others) while I am not in my internet browser. Even more concerning is that my explorer.exe is establishing a connection through port 443 (HTTPS) to a Windows.com domain (according to CurrPorts app). I'm not sure if that's the norm, or not, but, I don't see why my explorer.exe of all things needs to have an active connection to the web. While looking at IPConfig (from CMD.exe) I'm noticing that my IPv6 connection is using a temporary IPv6 address. Not being greatly familiar with advanced network settings, this threw a red flag up for me (among other things), as I hadn't configured my network to run in such a manner.

After some preliminary checks I'm coming up empty. However, I'm certain I have some sort of Trojan/Malware that has corrupted core system files, as I have a lot of unsolicited network activity (although typically unnoticeable without a Resource Monitor/ CurrPorts).

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently in the process of downloading the required anti-malware/virus programs which you request reports from, so lets track this thing down!

:-)

Nasdaq, I greatly appreciate you taking up this help request. However, after having freaked out about finding a malicious folder & files on my phone (named Touchage_Evil) that contained .PList data which linked to the same problem TCPip connections I'm seeing on my PC, I reformatted everything in hopes of resolving the issue (computer and phone). (Note: This was on my girlfriend's phone too, regarding a particular app that I had, which she did not. Which leads me to believe that this was from the computer, to the phone. Not vice versa.)

The phone seems to be fine now. The computer, however, is still making the same connections.

Unfortunately, I'm not at the problem computer at the moment. When able to, I will download FRST, re-run the scan, and provide the corresponding logs from the reformatted PC.

Further info regarding the the issues I'm having- http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/567185/suspicious-tcpip-connections-listening-ports/

Nasdaq, again I can't thank you enough for taking this up. I'll get the Logs posted here as soon as I get to the problem PC.

Thank you,

           2nuhh

I should add, the computer runs great 99.9% of the time, I just don't like the network connections that are being made, as I'm unsure why they are being made. I realize that when I visit a web site, there are a number of advertisements and so on and so forth, and thus, connections are being made. However, my main complaint is that there are plenty of connections being established while the computer is at an idle. I can understand Microsoft Updates being one connection (one that I would be okay with allowing at least). However, there are things like SkyDrive/ One-Drive, Pokki (which you listed Nasdaq), Nvidia's net services.... And a few others.. Those, to me, are the unnecessary connections being made as I'm not a fan of cloud-storage, or streaming with gaming devices that I don't own. Additionally, I'm not on a Business Network or anything like that, so I'm not sure why LMS.exe is being used. I also am not sure why Explorer.exe needs to connect to the internet either.

Furthermore, those connections that are being made, seem to have other, unwanted, connections that stem from them. This is what has led me to believe I have some sort of malware, be it a Trojan/backdoor/Adware. Additionally, (as stated in the "Am I Infected?" forum), whatever this thing is managed to load a folder onto two mobile devices named "Touchage_Evil". When viewing the .PList file with an XML Editor, I found that it was injecting a connection to an AmazonAWS.com domain through port 8080 INTO A MOBILE GAME APP which I had on my device.

So, in a nutshell, something bad is happening and my only two guesses as to what exactly caused this, are--

This is garbage that was loaded into the computer before it shipped from the Online-Retailer's warehouse (Newegg.com). The worst part about this is, I didn't take the time like I should have when I initially got the computer to go through the ins and outs of it- to see what was normal and what wasn't.

or (And this is very, very peculiar)

I was playing League of Legends. Had a game that was super laggy, hadn't seen anything like it until that point. Before we won the match, my LoLClient hard-locked/crashed. I tried to open up TaskManager to kill whatever it was that was eating up my CPU. Before I could get that far, TaskManager locked up. I pulled up the Windows screen to restart. Upon "restarting" an Update for windows was apparently going to happen. The computer black-screened and text came up that said something to the effect of, "Do not turn off your computer until this is finished". I'm not sure if that's standard for windows but I was already on Windows 8.1 and no updates were ready to be installed (to my knowledge). Being really new to Windows 8/8.1 (2.5months of experience) I just let it finish, as I didn't want to BSOD my 2month old computer. And now I'm here... :-(

That said, is it possible to inject complicated code through a gaming client like that to a host(me) on the other side? I suppose if this is directly related to that incident (which to me it seems like it is), the attacker on the other side would have known what he was doing, would have known how to have directly connected to my PC, and very well probably could have done exactly what I'm imagining was done.

At any rate, thank you again Nasdaq for helping me out. I hope this information is helpful.

Update 2/19-

While toggling a few connection settings (IPv4/IPv6), and adjusting some firewall rules (inbound/outbound) to block programs from needlessly connecting to the internet. I found that, once I limited the PC's ability to establish network connections, the default "program" became the PC's system itself. Well, that didn't sit well with me, so I enabled an executable that I don't plan on using- Nvidia's Shield Streaming service. Once I enabled that, it became my PC's default connection "interface". In other words, it didn't matter if the connections being made were relevant to the service or not, the computer HAD to be connected and therefore did so through whatever was available to it.

Sooo... I reverted back to where I began, with the exception of keeping IPv6 disabled (I really don't care for how IPv6 addresses are displayed), and a couple firewall rules enabled to block inbound/outbound LMS.exe, Nvstreamsvc and explorer.exe traffic. This seems to be helping a lot. My connection's look a little less suspicious. Unfortunately, "System" (PID 4) is still establishing connections to google domains, which, I'd really like to stop. Important to note, the "System" connections seem to occur regardless as to what is disabled. However, the more that is disabled, the more "System" connections are established.

Again, I hope this is helpful in diagnosing whatever it is that's going on here.

Ugh... I knew I had something.

Edit: I'm not sure why the Registry entries weren't auto-selected to delete, but, they're still there. Please advise at your first available convenience.

All of these paths were not selected to be deleted after running "delete" in rogue killer.

Well, I started up the problem pc and I'm getting a ton of read/write action going on in all sorts of places (up to 100% disk). I can't help but think that this thing has just gotten so interwoven into the system that it's incurable.

I'm seeing a lot of read/write going on in windows/system32/config & drivers, and with McAfee in general.

In config, what is standing out the most is a file from (TxR){-###hash###}.TMContainer000000000001.regtrans-ms

Then, a similar .regtrans-ms going on in drivers.

It just seems like this thing has written itself through the system and then through any programs that are on it.

Furthermore, after snooping around more in safe mode yesterday. I made hidden files and folders visible and am now seeing "desktop.ini" on the desktop, in my libraries and Downloads.

My c:\pagefiles.sys size is 8gigs, hiberfile.sys is almost 7gigs (is this normal after a re-format?)

The C:\ drive has a shortcut to it to Documents and Settings and is denying me access. Along with various other areas.

UPDATE-
I believe I've found something within ntuser.dat.LOG1 (which I've noticed has a lot of read/write as well).

I viewed this file with Wordpad and found a few hashes/app.Appxxxxxxxxxx looking blocks and something called JuniperNetworks.junospulsevpn.

I could just be grasping at straws, but I'd say it feels like that VPN app is running in my background and I'm not actually connected to my own internet. I see that log frequently, taking up decent amounts of r/w on the disk.

An recent error generated something about the "VSS service shutting down due to the system being idle.

Now, after a little research I find that, that is for making server backups...

How can we clean this whole thing out?

!!! Update !!!

When doing a search for Juniper on the C: drive, McAfee went crazy with "pending renames" for a bunch of hash-files (.tff). Now, explorer is working in system32 drivers and config folders. THEN!! McAfee tried to "update" itself.

This thing owns McAfee..

I wouldn't be surprised if it just nuked itself the next time I let it back on the Internet.

These .ini files are normally hidden and created by the operating system. Each folder has it's own. When you change the view on the folder that file is re-written and remembers the settings.

There could be an issue with Juniper Networks Windows In-Box Junos Pulse Client
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/2962393.aspx

Run the Windows update and download all the important updates that have not been installed.

THEN!! McAfee tried to "update" itself.

Was this accomplished?

No, I disconnected the computer from the Internet to prevent this thing from spreading any further. The system is using McAfee as an anti- anti-virus. (Or at least that's what it seems like).

There are 4 partitions on there and I can only access one (no option to explore the other 3) when in disk management.

The 10 day free trial for mcAfee should have expired over two months ago and now it's telling me I have 30 days.

I was looking at a system file that controls McAfee and it is establishing it's connection through various K-12 networks, as well as foreign military networks and places like state.nv.us.

If it wants to run an update, that's fine, but it should only be connecting to McAfee servers to do so, which it is not.

I've lost control over Nvstreamsvc.exe, which is establishing a network connection. When I try to end the task I get a ConHost error
