Hi all,

The past few days, I have gotten my first few blue screens on my Windows 8.1 Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 laptop (~1 1/2 years old).

Three or four of the blue screens have been the error code : Kernel Data Inpage Error, and I saw one which said "System Thread Exception Not Handeled"

The "My Dell" automatic hardware checking software included in this laptop had  Error code: WHD20-OYD for the "Targeted Read Test" and Error code: WHD16-GKP for the SMART Short Self Test. More details included in the attachment.

My computer has also been stuck on the startup screen a few times (Dell logo on black backdrop, with spinning circle, saying "Repairing Disk Errors. May take over an hour to complete", once I left it running for a few hours and it seemed to advance past it. I left it on overnight in that status yesterday, and it hadn't completed by this morning so I restarted and my computer is working as of now...

Once I had also restarted it while it was stuck on a black screen, and it took me to a black screen saying "Operating System not Found".

What steps should I take? Will I have to replace my hard drive? I have begun backing up some more important files to Dropbox, should I be backing up any system files? This laptop gets carried around in my backpack to school, I wouldn't be surprised if I've messed up the HDD because of rough handling. If you would like me to run anymore tests, please let me know which one(s) and I'll figure it out.

Thank you for the help.

I have attached the BSOD minidumps into this post, and I'm also running CrystaldiskInfo right now.

GSmart Control, under the Attributes tab,

there is a pink entry called "Current Pending Sector Count" Failed: Never, Norm-ed value: 100, Worst: 100, Threshold: 0, Raw Value: 114,  Type: Old Age, Updated: Continuously, Flag 0x0032.

Also, three entries under the "type" column say "Pre-Failure". These entries are Raw Read Error Rate, Spin Up Time, and Reallocated Sector Count.

I'm currently running the "extended self test" in GSmartControl, will update when it's finished.

Were there any columns in red or pink after the GSmartControl test?

Were there any columns in red or pink after the GSmartControl test?

Yup,

There is a pink entry called "Current Pending Sector Count" Failed: Never, Norm-ed value: 100, Worst: 100, Threshold: 0, Raw Value: 114,  Type: Old Age, Updated: Continuously, Flag 0x0032.

Also, three entries under the "type" column say "Pre-Failure". These entries are Raw Read Error Rate, Spin Up Time, and Reallocated Sector Count.

I just read all your posts and it looks to that your HDD is done for it. Back up all your data as soon as you can, then buy a new one and reinstall Windows on it. That HDD is coming to an end, we just don't know when it'll fail.

Alright. Should I just backup personal files/data, or are there program/system/windows files I should be backing up too?

It's for you. Personally, I always back up my personal files and start from a fresh installation. This way I avoid any issues with cloning, restore, incompatibility, etc.

So when I put in the new hard drive, how do I install Windows and all? I have a "Windows 8 OS Recovery Key" from Dell, as well as my Windows 8 serial key that came with the laptop.

If you have a Windows reinstallation CD/DVD that came with the laptop, I would use it to reinstall Windows. All you have to do is to insert it and boot from it.

I don't have one I'm fairly certain. Just the USB key (only 8 GB) so I doubt it's for Windows 8 reinstallation.

No, the motherboard had to replaced twice and the technician/Dell gave that to me during that time, but I never had to use it.
