Greetings. Re: Dell Laptop Inspiron 15. with Windows 8.   Can't really pinpoint when or why this happened, but for some reason the laptop updated to 8.1 from 8. The unit wasn't operating that well before this happened, now things are worse and the first thing we want to do is to go back to 8. Taking some advice and going to settings and entering "REFRESH YOUR PC WITHOUT AFFECTING YOUR FILES." so, we clicked on that  and got "Insert Media some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files" Next we inserted the recovery media and we get; THE MEDIA INSERTED NOT VALID. Our objective is to get back to windows 8. Thanks You.

Hi Robert :)

I suggest you to stay under Windows 8.1 and let us help you dealing with your current issues. The reason is that Windows 8 support will be dropped before Windows 8.1, and the upgrade also includes a lot of enhanced features, bug fix, security patch, etc. You have more to win by staying under Windows 8 then by going back to Windows 8. I can assist you with solving your current issues if you wish, just list them to me and we'll fix them one by one.

OK, I accept. My wife actually is the one who uses the laptop mostly to play games.

Then there is another situation with Gamesville which takes forever to get on to and when she does, it is as erratic as can be. It wasn't good before 8.1 and now it's worse. I think the first thing that I would address is why would there be files missing?

I don't think that the games not working on Gamesville are related to missing files, since the games are online, and not installed locally on your system. Let's see a few things first.

This is a little awkward for me since I present a novice approach and am not working from the laptop in question but: the MiniToolBox revealed: Boot Mode is normal. Under Flush DNS, Windows IP Configuartion, Successfully Flushed the DNS Resolver Cache. Under IF Proxy Settings; Proxy not enabled, No Proxy server is set and Reset IE Proxy Settings: IE Proxy settings were not reset. On the DxDiag, Other than the first page which lists all of the description of the computer, Display, Sound and Input all say "no problems found. " If there is something within the description of the unit that you want to see, I can convey it as I am now. Unless you can direct me on how I can display an image on here.

I would like you to copy and post the content of both logs (MiniToolBox and dxdiag) here so I can see for myself, thank you.

I agree and I am trying to do just that. Unless there is a way to directly transmit from my documents to bleeping computers forum, I believe I need to go to tiny pic or another like website to achieve the result. When I try to download to tiny pic, I get an invalid format. so, I believe I have to change to an accepted format, which I am working on as we write.

Is it possible to have the dxdiag log now? Also, you can uninstall Java 8 Update 25 (outdated), and Dell Toolbar (useless).
